Hey, guys 'n gals: The Canadian Maple Leaf silver coins I ordered a couple of weeks ago finally arrived today and they are GORGEOUS! They are about the same diameter as a US Morgan dollar but they contain a full Troy ounce of silver so are thicker. They have a very nice solid feel in the hand. I handled them carefully but I HAD to hold them in my hands. Here is a pic of the latest addition to my silver bullion collection: There was one little oddity in this shipment, though. Maples come in taller plastic tubes than ASEs do because there are 25 Maples to a tube instead of 20. When I carefully emptied the tubes onto a cloth on my computer bench, I noticed that one of the stacks looked shorter than the others. Hmmm, not good. I counted the coins and sure enough there were only 24 in that tube. I then counted the coins in the other tubes and found that 2 of them had the expected 25 coins but the last one had 26 coins. The total coin count was correct in spite of the two tubes that were long and short a coin. I would guess that this happened when the coins were inspected prior to shipping. Not a big deal at all but it sure had my attention for a minute there! Counting this most recent addition to my silver hoard, I now have 528 Troy ounces of the good stuff. I do not consider this as "spending money" but merely converting bad (and getting worse) money into good money. Keep on stackin'!

That's quite a stack. You do this every year, and pretty soon you've got quite the investment.
Not to mention a heavy one.

BTW Maples at $5 x 100 = $500 ASE's at $1 x 100 = $100 Current exchange rate $500 Canadian dollars = $496.36 US Dollars. Thus you made $396.36 even if silver went to zero. Just a different way of looking at the extra value of the Maple since the silver price is the same.

Quote: Nice stacks Ed. You need to stop making me drool. Thanks, Merlin. My technique for dealing with that is to lean back away from the PC so that any falling drool does not short out the keyboard. Quote: Thus you made $396.36 even if silver went to zero. I'm good with that. Not that it is likely that silver will ever go to zero, of course. I'm just thinking that these might come in real handy if I ever need to leave the US and head north. I try to buy a little on a regular basis but when the price of silver dropped to $30 an oz. a few weeks ago, I ordered 200 ounces, half in 5-oz. bars and half in ASEs. When the price continued to stay low, I thought "what the heck" and ordered these Maples from a special sale that APMEX was having. Buying even a little on a regular basis is good but when the price of silver drops, that's the time to back up the truck!

Awesome slick haul, Ed! I have the same obsession with the shiny metallic stuff, but just stopped buying the dollar sized coins. Graduated to the 5 oz. rounds and picked up 30 of them during the dip. O happy day...

Ed_B, maybe spread the wealth a bit. If you please. All that metal in one mans hands just isn't right.

When silver dropped to $30 a few weeks ago, I also bought some ASE's. But only 15.

Very nice! The Maple's tubes can all fit 26 as snug as the ASE tubes. Threw me off too the first time I bought a full tube, thinking that the dealer short-changed me 1 coin per tube.

They are all the SilverTowne "donkey bars", with the prospector and his mule on one side. I really like them and want to add more at some point. Good for you in getting some silver at the recent low price. Gotta buy the dips! Quote:Ed_B, maybe spread the wealth a bit. If you please. All that metal in one mans hands just isn't right. Quote: Really nice pickup ED - I likey. Thanks, Trip. I was thinking that I would like the Maples and I was right. They are gorgeous coins with a very shiny surface and a nice hefty feel. Not sure if I will buy any more of them for a while but they are nice. Quote: Very nice, up to over half your goal in a very short time. Thanks, Hawk. Yes, it is nice to be so far along in so short a time. I'm lovin' it! Quote: Must be something to see up close in person. the entire hoard.... Yes, it would be if they were all in one place. Right now, they are split about 50-50 between a SDB at our CU and our safe at home. Silver is valuable stuff. A small pile of it is worth quite a bit. It's not as impressive as gold in that regard but it is still impressive to see a pile all in one place. I was reading on-line last night and the article I was reading said that most people today had never seen a silver coin. That seems really odd to me, having grown up at a time when silver WAS money! Everyone knew what a silver coin looked and felt like back in the day. These days? Not so much, it seems.

I did a promotion for my scrap gold biz: "guess the value of this bag of gold and win a Morgan silver dollar!" Even though folks were walking by regularly, they wouldn't participate. I asked folks later why not, and they said they didn't want to give out their info for a mere dollar. Sigh.

I didn't know about the blow trick but you can flip a silver coin in the air, using your thumb and forefinger. If you give it a good hard flip, it will ring like a bell. The silver dollars are particularly good for this. I haven't tried this with an ASE, as they are pretty big, but it should work with them too. Quote: I asked folks later why not, and they said they didn't want to give out their info for a mere dollar. I can see why they wouldn't. Our local hardware store has a contest where they give away a shopping spree as a prize. I haven't signed up for it because I don't want to be endlessly nagged about shopping there or have my info sold to telemarketers.
