I don't think that you can make the determination that a coin has been cleaned based on real brightly lit pictures. I had that 1850
Seated dollar a couple years ago....and nearly everybody said that, judging by the pictures, it had been cleaned ... except NGC. They slabbed it AU58.
That said ....yes it probably has been cleaned, since 95 percent of the seated material has. I'm picking up material for longer term investment, and eventually the attitude toward material that's been reasonably cleaned ... not talking sandblaster and floor waxer here ... will lighten up.
Just for entertainment purposes, do a search on
ebay using terms like "cleaned" or "environmental damage" and see how it affects what folks ask for stuff. I took a "pass" on a 1917 type 1 quarter a mionth or so ago at 29.95. It was in a pcgs slab. A dealer bought it and has it back up right now, and is asking 90 dollars for it. The "environmental damage" is a bit of green on the reverse, which it seems to me would probably be pvc contamination, and I don't know why it is that they would encapsulate it at all in that case. Like it or not, for the long term, that will have to be removed.
Anyways. ... it was a screamin' price for a scarce coin, regardless of the cleaning issue, and I wouldn't expect to be able to get 300 dollars for it in this economy. I'm keeping all of this stuff until the kid's show in DC is over, and the reins of government have been given back to adults with actual experience rather than ridiculous ideological dreams. Because until people are working and have money to spend, nothing's going to move especially well.
Sorry about the wee bit of political diatribe, and moderators can feel free to delete that if it crosses the line.
