A 1942 proof lincoln, PCGS certified as PF 64. It has blue toning in some areas on the reverse, I saw it and immediatly asked how much. I should be able to get it in about 4 weeks... yup I'm that poor LOL

I never knew coin shops did layaway! I'll have to ask my coin guy if he does this or would do it. Would make large value coins easier to get if you can make payments. so far that's why I have had to stay away from large buys as money is tight these days.

I consider it always a great pick up when you can get a pre-1950 proof! Congrats. Most folks will never own one of those!

I'd love to own a 1942 proof set... A Wheat cent, two different composition nickels, a Mercury dime, silver Washington and a walking liberty!

I presume you aren't worried about buying food. I can wait to see it when you get it. You might try to offer the dealer an early payoff at a reduced price.

I collect proofs of ANY country before the mints around the World realised that there was money to be made out of the large scale production of proof coins.
According to my judgement, that means proofs produced before aboput 1960.
penny man: Good on ya, fella! A very satisfactory acquisition.

@sel69l -- Your 1960 cut-off is a pretty good one, but there are lots of countries around the world who still mint proofs in very low numbers. Of course, the difference is that these countries also have very few collectors of their coinage worldwide. Thus, not only is number of minted sets important but the current supply together with the demand. Or, even more interesting to think/hypothesize about is "which countries are the up-and-coming economic stars, which in turn may have a *boom* in coin-collecting amongst their population in the coming years"? Two such countries are Brazil and China.
A low mintage proof set post-1960 that comes to mind is the Greece 1978 proof set with a mintage of only 20,000 sets. Sorry for the tangential post here...
