It all has to do with the amount the hub sunk into the die, the amount the die struck the coin, and the amount of polishing or die wear on the die when it struck the coin. All of these things can affect the amount of bevel left to the letters and how thick they appear on the finished coin. There were no significant changes to the reverse master hub between 1982 and 1986, so all 1984 cents were struck with essentially the same reverse design...they just appear different because of the conditions listed above.

I would like to use your coins as examples in my upcoming book if I could. I think they display this anomaly very well. If you agree and can send me 300dpi JPEG images shot in good light and clear focus, I will credit you in the book when completed.
