Thanks for educating me. In defense of my ignorance I've never even bothered to study these coins at all. I just assumed they were silver. I still like when silver looks like this, though. |

I still like when silver looks like this, though. The 3 cent denomination began in 1851 with a composition of 75% silver and 25% copper. In 1854 the composition was changed to 90% silver and 10% copper. The trime as they were called ended in 1873. The 3 cent piece in nickel was struck by necessity. During the civil war the trimes were hoarded and not to be found in circulation. There was still a need for Three Cent pieces so the Mint began striking a 3 cent coin in nickel in 1865 to satisfy that need in commerce. 1884 has the second lowest mintage of the series. The 1885 has the lowest at 1,000 pieces struck for circulation. Both of these dates plus the 1883, 4,000 struck, had more proofs than circulation strikes and are easier to locate. You are a silver dollar guy Darth so your ignorance is understandable. When you said you like your silver to look like this I knew you were unfamiliar with the denomination. Here is a 76-S Seated Liberty half dollar that I picked up to upgrade my type set. I'm not a big enough coin-snob (yet) to let the fact that it's been cleaned bother me.   Edited by Nickels_rule

From the photos, it really doesn't look cleaned to me. If it was, it must have been a light cleaning a long time ago. BTW....Very nice upgrade to your type set!  |

Thank You Nickel Guy, I'm very happy about getting this coin, the one it replaces belongs in one of those "low ball" sets. :-) Being a novice I really have to rely heavily on what I am told and the seller said he thought it had been cleaned at some point. I don't know but I think it looks great and am thrilled with it.

Got this 49 D in the mail today. When Mt. Vernon sends me the 53-S they owe me that will leave only ONE more coin to complete my set.   |

Posted this earlier on an identical topic without realizing there was already one that's over 170 pages long! Woops! Sorry if I shouldn't have posted the same thing twice. If that is against the rules, I ask the moderators to kindly remove this post. Anyway, bought these earlier for a total of less than $50. The large cents aren't the prettiest bunch, but I couldn't pass them up at $23 for the lot. 1857-O Seated dime  1837 Large Cent, poor fellow   1838 Large Cent with verdigris on rim   1840 Large Cent with some rim bumps   |
