Earlier this year I got back into my first love, collecting Big Sisters (U S Large Cents - Braided Hair Variety).

This part of the hobby isn't something you can collect a lot of quickly unless you want to just get any coin to fill a hole. I tend to try to find the best looking coin I can afford for the money I have available. Unlike when I was working, and making pretty good money, my funds don't allow for the higher grade coins I had with my previous collection.

All that said, I recently purchased an 1853 N-11 which would have been graded a full MS-62 if it weren't for the scratches and rim dings on the reverse. Overall EAC grading is probably an AU-50. Standard grading probably is an MS-62 obverse/AU50 reverse. It still have very nice eye appeal. CaleyAnn

Any Idea what is wrong with this one ? Some sort of film surrounding it.

Longbow, Morgans are very cool coins. I've a set my Dad gave me, all the 1921's in average circulated.

When I looked at your coins, the 1900P condition jumped out at me. The first thing that hit my mind was someone attempted to clean the coin. Of course, I am still learning about such things, but someone seems to have done something to this coin. Still, it is a good example of the date/mint mark.

Your 1883O exhibits some nice rainbow toning on the obverse. The colouring isn't over cooked like some toning I have seen. A nice find for you. CaleyAnn

Longbow, It is really difficult when first starting collecting not to purchase something someone tried to enhance. But you can use the line, "if it looks strange, then consider not purchasing it." Try watching the PCGS videos about coin grading. One of them has something on how to spot altered coins. Silver coins when dipped will lose their luster. They will look flat. Some people will try to polish a coin. Usually the coins will have super fine scratches. Some people trying to enhance a coin will dip it, then try to artificially tone a coin. These usually never turn out, the coins having a strange mottled appearance, especially with coppers. My suggestion is you go online for a day, and watch videos on coin grading and alterations. Read what material you can find on the subject also. This material will usually be accompanied by photos. Google Morgan dollars, cleaned or polished or whatever you can think of, and you should get something. Best wishes on your collecting. CaleyAnn
