What did you pay for the 1948 5 Peso silver coins. That coin was only minted in 1948 and 49. If you got them for $16 each you really got a good deal IMO. I don't know how many of the 1948 5 Peso coins were minted, but they are heavy and around 90% silver. Do they have numismatic value? I have a couple of them and I would buy them all day for $16 each. I have quite a few large Mexican silver coins that are around 70% silver (Cein Peso 1978-9). I wonder if they have any numismatic value? There are just a bunch of large Mexican silver coins but few that are near 90% silver. I like all large silver coins. The French and Dutch had large silver coins and I am not sure of the silver content. I have some Thalers and commemorative British coins from Bermuda and other former possessions. I wonder what the Turks&Caicos Islands 1976 20 Crown Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth commemorative coin is going for these days. It is 1.1509 ounces. It is huge.

The two 1948-Mo 5 Pesos are actually MS63-MS64 upon further inspection, and I did indeed pay $16 each because they were sold as pure bullion. Each one is a large 40mm diameter, 30g (0.868 ozt. ASW) at 0.900 fine; for comparison, a Morgan $1 is 26.73g (0.773 ozt. ASW.) This design (Cuauhtehmoc) was only used in 1947 and 1948, see KM#465 which lists a mintage for the 1948 issue of 26.74 million and a value in MS63 of $35.00.
At their current melt value of $14.83 for their 0.868 ASW I bought them for $1.17 over melt, not bad for two choice-uncirculated big heavy coins with attractive designs! I'll post full pictures tonight for you.

Not a new purchase but pretty cool. My Dad passed away in July and in going through his stuff I found this. It was hard to see this but great at the same time. I was 12 when I got this for his birthday. I doubt I paid more than 5-10 bucks for it. But its never getting sold or coming out of this holder! Todd  |

That is a great picture. It obviously meant a lot to your father that you gave him the coin. Of course, what made it priceless to him (and you) is the 2x2. It's nice that you found it while going through his belongings. What a nice memory you can have for years to come.

You got the 5 peso 1948 coins for a really fantastic price. Just a few months ago I saw them selling on ebay for $25 each. I wonder how many of those were minted? There are a lot of large Mexican coins but not that many that are 90% silver. They only minted those 5 peso coins in 1948-49. Overall, you got a great deal on the silver. |

Placed a bid on this lot of 9 Jeffersons for $5 just based on the silver and actually won it. Seller's picture and my picture (edited into one giant picture) - think I did okay for $5. Seller pic is the 2x2's. The photos in mine were taken in haste, but still give you an idea. I received my coin from JeffRose which now occupied in the slot of my 7070 album. My pictures taken with my Canon SD1300 IS which shows more details. Thanks Jeff!   In hands, those nicks aren't that noticeable, but when you enlarge above 200%, everything exemplify. |
