it does look like silver and if it was struck on a dime planchet the details would be weak because it's thinner than a copper cent...I'm just wondering how the rim seems to be so strong. It might be worth $100 or more if it wasn't for those scratches.

This is not a struck coin at all. It is likely just a casting. What I don't get is if it was made of silver it would weigh more than 3.1 grams. 3.1 grams is what a proper 95% copper cent weighs and copper doesn't have the same specific gravity as silver at all. I suspect even the letter is a forgery

There is an F.Fazzari at ICG, but I cannot reconcile the poor appearance of the coin to that letter...is either authentic? Is it customary for ICG to authenticate coins by letter?

I assume the scratching on the obverse was done by someone crudely to see if it was a copper cent that had been silver plated. As to the the rest of the story I don't know. If ICG won't authenticate your coin who will?

BTW...I didn't read or even look at the letter from ICG.
And what does Lincoln cent-like coin mean anyway?

Also...a specific gravity test is normally very rigorous--wouldn't he disclose the results?
It just doesn't track that a silver coin that size would only weigh 3.1gr. A 90% coin that size should weigh closer to 3.57gr.

I'm amazed someone bid on that. The letter is probably real. I think they can't confirm it is a fake but are pretty sure it isn't real, so that's why they sent that letter.

It sold for $425.

I guess at least one person felt it had some numismatic value.
