I found this dollar when we cleaned out my great aunt's rooms. It belonged to her husband. I looked up "short snorter", and found this website: http://www.shortsnorter.org/index.html.

Quote:
A short snorter is a banknote which was signed by various persons traveling together or
meeting up at different events and records who was met. The tradition was started by bush
pilots in Alaska in the 1920's and subsequently spread through the growth of military and
commercial aviation. If you signed a short snorter and that person could not produce it upon
request, they owed you a dollar or a drink (a "short snort", aviation and alcohol do not mix!).

Does anyone have a short snorter to share?

I have seen a few 'short snorters' on J.I.M. (Japanese invasion money) which were signed by both American and Australian servicemen.

These notes take their place in historic memorabilia collections relating to WW2.
As such, they can be an interesting starting point into a search of military history.

I have a $2 bill- series 1976 I think- where someone wrote on it "Have a snort on me!" but there's no name or any other information on it.

Never heard of the "short snort" though!

haha, last night I was looking through the old bills I have stashed away and what do you know.

I see what I had always thought of as illegible scrawling on one note but now that I know what I am looking for it's clearly a person's name and "las vegas." Cant remember the series on the bill but I think it was old. I'll try to post a pic today or tomorrow.

This is cool!

Nope not a short snort. Is an older bill, but still way too new. And it seems short snorts are on $1 and this is a $5. Inflation perhaps? But here's a picture anyway. 25_______ (anniversary maybe?) Las Vegas. And here's also the "have a snort on me" $2 bill.

So, after reading this post I saw a couple of bills and had to buy them...

I don't see a date and don't know how to date Brazilian currency but it came in a lot with several other bills of wwii vintage and the names seem American.

EDITED TO ADD: I went ahead and googled the names, and one on the back of the 10 is indeed a US serviceman. Melvin D Hall is listed as being on USS Oakland, CL-95. Coincidence? Maybe... but it looks more and more like a short snort. How cool! It's like a piece of history in my hand, I love stuff like that. (PS if anyone has any opinion on the signatures let me know I am having difficulty reading them.)

Oh, and I know these notes are brazilian not US but hopefully y'all will forgive me especially with the fact that this looks more and more like US Servicemen.

Here's the better of the two.

voshus001,
those coordinates are in the middle of the Pacific, about half way between Hawaii and the Philippines. It looks to be part of the Marshall Islands, a bit less than 100 miles from Enewetak Atoll(11N, 162E) and about 200 miles from Bikini Atoll. That area was home to the 1940s-60s above ground atomic bomb testing and saw dozens of blasts.

I have seen a few "short snorters" based on Australian notes of the WW2 era.
And I agree, there could be some "diamonds in the rough" among them, awaiting research.
