Hi, I'm looking for my first cap and ray, and before getting a superb early durango one ... I saw this one which looks fine. Do you think it's safe ? What would be a good price ? Thanks for your advices :)

Hello MathiewMa,
Welcome to collecting the famous "Resplandores"
This mid-date 1863 Mexico City piece looks legit to me, with proper stamp, initials and design. It's a nice historical piece since they were minted right before Maximillian's "empire".
If you decide to purchase it be sure to go through the usual checks of edge, weight and such.
Your experience with the Spanish 8R's will be useful with the Mexican 8R's so you should have no problems entering the world of cap & Rays.
Dunigan notes a possible very rare o over H variety so you might want to examine it very carefully once you have it in hand.
As far as current price I'd be looking to spend from $40 to $50 dollars maybe a tad more if you really want it or if guaranteed not to have been cleaned (can't tell for sure).
Have fun!

Looks nice and original, congrats!
Not much die rust on the cap side as usually seen with these, too.

Cool, it was a nice price imho, as the coin is in great shape, well strikes and without much harm :) I'll now look for a nice early zacatecas one (no, don't mention the next stack & bowers auction - MS64 is too expensive ...)

Coin looks great!
Your pictures make the coin look a lot better than the original ones. Coin has a lot more color than I thought.
Yeah the Zacatecas pieces are beautiful but they were heavily counterfeited so there will be a lot of contemporary counterfeits to weed through in your search.
By the way, how does one get into those auctions like Stack & bowers? Is there a membership or some other requirement?

Not sure how I did for stack, but I think I just registered an account. Some require you to leave your credit card number (Sedwick was one of those), and other ask you for references (which I'm not sure are verified) I'm buying from abroad (france) - and never had issues attending to any auction in spain or in the US. You may have issues registering though if you want to attend to today's auction, they often take a couple of days to validate an account.

You are cutting it close on registration, live bidding starts in eight hours. The photos are spot on, in fact the coins looked better in person.
Gem Republic 8Rs are going through the roof, I think money from the orient is chasing them.
