The Fugio here is my first Colonial Coin. The Photos are also my first attempt at taking and posting coin photos. I'm still tinkering with the clarity. On my hard drive they are crystal clear and can be enlarged to show great detail. When I size them to download here they seem to lose the clarity. Any pointers would be appreciated! Thanks Susan. I am still learning the ropes with my daughters help. The pictures as loaded to my hard drive are stunning.Fugio's often are weakly struck by the "Mind Your Business" motto. I have total detail on the sun dial and the rings are all solid on the reverse. I'm losing something in making them small enough to be be accepted as attachments on the forum. The camera is a Sony Mavica 5.1 mega pixel with a macro setting for extreme close ups. You can see very fine details on the zoom settings. I'm not sure how to make that function work here(except for the one zoom by putting the curser on the corners). My daughter said if someone downloaded the pictures to their hard drive they could use the multi zoom feature as well. I'll keep playing until I figure it out! Mike

Mike, those are really nice pictures. I don't think you need to improve upon them.
I wonder if that rim ding on the 1838 BHD is severe enough for PCGS to reject it, especially since the rest of the coin is in such beautiful condition. Nothing ventured...

Pics are nice. Try cropping them...even in the slab to enhance your pics. I like to use GE's Reveal light bulbs to help with the color. Afterwards, I like to add text, like mintage numbers. Here are samples taken with an old Olympus 3.1 digital camera: Download Attachment: 1882CC-A.jpg56.38Â KB Download Attachment: 1903-OMS64PL.jpg52.29Â KB MORGAN FRED...where have you been? It has been quiet here without ya!

Even with the rim nick on the half, that is an absolutely stunning coin. The others are gorgeous, but I have a soft place in my heart for bust halves (see my avatar ). The detail is fabulous!

Hello everyone! This is fun! Thanks for the pointers Zakgold! I will try that next time. I bought the G.E. bulbs but did not use them yet. Fred, I have a buddy who has been a dealer for 30 years and he suggested the exact same thing you did! He said PCGS may slab it because it is a minor hit. He also thought it would grade 64/65. Susan, bust halfs are one of my weakness's as well. I will post a neat overdate with a die break and a clean 1833 below. Both look better if you hit the single zoom(corners) Mike Download Attachment: 1814over3BustObv.jpg67.18Â KB Download Attachment: 1814over3BustRev.jpg77.63Â KB Download Attachment: 1833BustHalfObv.jpg68.43Â KB Download Attachment: 1833BustHalfRev.jpg75.37Â KB

Mike,
Very nice. Your overdate is interesting. There appears to be a die crack from the top of the "C" up to the right wing. This is not shown in my Overton book. Is this a new variety that was identified recently?

Susan, I have Overtons book as well and you won't find the "break" because it is a funny looking scratch that somehow did not scratch the arrow shafts! In fact, the coin has to be seen from an odd angle to even see the scratch at all! Beginners luck with the camera I guess. The break I was refering to is on the obverse below the date. I took a look and think it match's Overton 101-A on the button. The scratch may be a die clash as it matchs up with rev A in the book description. Perhaps that's why it looks to be under the shafts. This is the part I love!!!! The biggest break on the obverse is much more noticable in hand and under glass. I have a great 22 over 1 and a 24 over (4) or ? as Overton calls it a jumble of recuts. I lost my photography tutor for a few days and will continue photos on all my Bust's next time I get a chance. Thanks, Mike

The obverse looks like a perfect match for 101A. The only thing I can think of on the reverse is that the scratch was on the planchet prior to striking. A very cool piece!

Nice coin Mike. If you ever want to get rid of it keep my name handy. I'm sure that I could find a home for it. (VBG)

Thanks folks! ND and Catman, what do you think the 1838 Bust Half (photo's a few posts back) would grade at? With the rim nick do you think PCGS or NGC would grade it or bag it?(or drop the grade so much it would be a waste of money). Morgan Fred, Susan and a Buddy who is a dealer say they think it's worth a shot. My dealer Buddy says without the nick it's a 64/65 coin. What's your take on that? Iwould really appreciate any opinions on the grade and odds of a sucessful submission! Thanks, Mike Mike

I am assuming that the color is off due to the picture. With that in mind, the rim bump appears to be pretty deep. Again this is based on the pic. It may not look that bad in person. PCGS is going to take a long hard look, and if the denticles are damaged, this coin will end up in a body bag. If they are not damaged, you can expect a 62/63. Having the bump on the obverse will take a full point off of the grade.
