I just bought a Nikon Coolpix L24 to take pictures for coins. Would you guys give me some tips about how to take excellent pictures?

Thanks a lot!

I'm no expert, but I use a Sony Cybershot. I bought a small tripod at Best Buy and I shoot straight down. I use two desklamps with cfl bulbs.(I have Reveal, White and Daylight.) Always use the same type of bulb in both lamps and turn off all background light.(The camera has a hard time adjusting to different types of light.) Most of the time the lamps are at 12 and 3 o'clock but depending on the coin you may have to move them around to get optimum lighting. Then it's just practice, practice, practice.
Also I use a free downloadable editing software called photoscape, that will help with white balance and cropping and templates.
Hope this is helpful. Here are a couple of pics using my setup and Photoscape.

This camera is an overall nice camera, ?But I don't see any manual controls over the camera's functions, which means the camera decides what it thinks is best of what you are viewing... and that will change each time you power up...It really depends on how sharp of an image your are trying to represent.....for coins, as an example...they are smaller...and need to use the cameras macro mode, SO its plug in and play with the lighting and your available settings to get your best results...It doesn't mean you can't get decent shots on coins, it only means the pic's you take many not look exactly like the coin in hand...some thing we all work with and around, without the manual controls it is what it is,... the pics are what you get with the controls you have... for point and shoot cameras today may be great and tomorrows may be different...as the camera thinks it knows what you want with a point and shoot camera..
