Can anyone please fill me in on why there is such a large difference in basic prices between the Mercury 1916 D and Washington 1932 D and 1932 S coins? All three of them have mintage's at a little over 400,000 but the G4 price is around ten times as much for the dime.

The 1916-D Mercury dime had a mintage of only 264,000, and because of various accidents of history, few were saved in higher grades. Also, it's overpriced in low grades. I think Mercury dimes are probably more popular too.

I am terribly sorry. I got my mintage's for the 1916 D dime and the 1909 S VDB LWC confused. Thanks for bringing this to my attention. Please disregard my post.

I agree with the captain though that Mercs are definitely more popular so all of the forces that have contributed to the dimes availability are compounded by the amount of interest in it.

If you really want to see a price discrepancy look in your RedBook at the prices of silver 3-cent pieces minted from 1863-1872. You've got mintages ranging from 22,000 to just 1000 coins in a given year and can still pick them up for around $1000 in low MS condition.
