This lovely variety, recognized by CCCS, is extremely tough to find.

It has N/N in CANADA and A/V in VICTORIA, or now known as "Bar V".

So far, I'm finding one for every 100 1872s I see.

A ratio of 1:100...that's RARE.

Here are 3 examples, with 30x magnification of the V.

I plan to have all 3 hard slabbed.

Enjoy.

1:100 sounds about right.
If only one half of one percent of Victoria quarters survive then there should be over 100 of these coins out there.I wouldn't call that RARE.At least five have been sold on ebay in the last year and a half,I bought 2.
I don't believe they're worth hard slabs until VF20 or so.A soft slab is good enough for resale.

There are about 100 1906 small crown 25c as well...

There was a time when these could be had for $5. Now, a G4 goes for $1800. I have one in a hard slab ;).

There is a story that Pitman bought a EF-MS example on ebay for $600. It is worth $30-50,000 now.

A 100 known examples of a coin, is extremely rare. IMO.
I hard slabbed the only one I had...then I was lucky enough to find 2 more...I suspect I'll find a few more over the next few years...I'll hard slab them ALL

Many wont survive as they'll be melted in the silver bubble of 2011...as worn 1872s are essentially worth only bullion...

I think between all of us on these boards, there's maybe 20 known examples?

75 examples of the 1921 50c exist, 75 examples of the 2006P non-magnetic cent exist, 400 examples of the 1921 5c...

IMO extremely rare, desirable coins don't pop up on ebay bi-monthly,and sell for peanuts, this coins rarity and desirabilty is an illusion.I paid less for each of mine than the cost of a hard slab, how can this be if they are so sought after? Put a raw 1906 small crown, unattributed, for sale on ebay at a low start price and see how much attention that would get.

Ahh..but you've just expressed it perfectly.

When 2-3 people compete for 100 coins, that can be had at $5, the coins are perceived to be neither rare, nor desirable.
For decades, the 1859 DP9 #1 and #2 were sold for $2 a piece. For decades, they were neither rare, nor desirable.

But when 2000 people compete for those same 100 coins, and the price readjusts to $5000, now they are perceived rare and desirable.

Human psychology and herd behaviour. No one wants Apple stock at $5. Everyone wants it at $500. We are herd animals, reacting to what everyone else is doing.

Finally, you are already wrong about desirability. A 1872 25c V bar was advertised as such and sold on ebay a few weeks ago in VG for $300. The winning sucker was me.

That coin is pictured in this post (the 3rd coin). Interestingly, two other experienced ebayers, were willing to pay close to $300 for a VG example. Hence, not even being aware of it, your $10 coins are probably worth ~ $300 at this moment in time, if advertised properly.

That being said...I bought the other VG pictured in this post, 10 days ago for a $14 buy-it-now within 2 hours of its listing.

I consider all 3 to be worth the $13 hard slab, and wouldnt sell any for less than $1000.

I suspect, the fellas at coin-cabinet would agree

FYI - ebay was founded in September of 1995, and in 1996, only 250,000 auctions had taken place. Note that John Jay Pittman died in 1996. That story you heard is fiction, unless you are referring to another collector of Canadian coins named 'Pittman'...

The story is true but it was Sid Belzberg, he posted the link on a forum after winning. I am not sure of the grade but think it came in at EF45. it was around the same time he sold his collection.

The term rare is way over used when it come to collecting in the hopes of turning a profit. I am not sure what deserves the term rare. For example the 1858 .10 Blundered I it tooks me months to find one, I consider it to be rare due to the fact I could not find a listed example for sale easily. There was an example for sale in the summer for $450 which I kick myself for not buying (It was relisted for $2500 recently, and did not sell)

That's true...rarity and scarcity are very subjective terms.

Many people think the 1948 dollar is rare, yet there are 20 of them listed on ebay at any given time.
In fact, it's probably one of the more common coins you can find on ebay :).

The 1858 blundered I is rare, I have found 3 examples (bought 1) in the last 4-5 months.

This 1872 25c A/V is rare, the 1874 25c inverted Vs in CANADA is rare...

Where you are talking ~ 100 examples of a given coin, for a population of 30 million potential collectors, I think its safe to say you're in the "RARE" range

The other consideration is condition rarity how many examples are VF and above. I generally do not buy coins below VF, is why I pick VF.
48 dollars are far from rare, a better term is popular.

I agree with collector67...48 dollars are far from rare, but are certainly popular at the right price

A 1948 dollar is similar to a Proof-like 1c 1954 NSF. I call those "money coins", because if you want one, all it takes is money to buy one...
