I don't know much about these. How long were they made? What is the composition and weight, and is it a British coin?

This will give you the info you need. I think they were made by Great Britain for trade in China and were also brought to Hong-Kong, owned by the British at that time.

...is it a British coin?

That depends on who you ask. American collectors using the Krause catalogues (or the NGC link given above) tend to say "Yes, it's British", because there really isn't any other country they "belong" to. Collectors in Britain itself, that tend to use the Spink catalogues which do not list them, tend to say "no", because the coins never circulated in Britain.

These coins were not actually struck in Britain. They were struck at mints in British India, for use in trade with China (including Hong Kong) and elsewhere in east and southeast Asia, in competition with the Mexican 8 reales and other Trade dollars.

You should also be aware that this coin is frequently counterfeited, both in good silver as "jewellery copies" and in base-metal alongside the other cheap counterfeits coming out of China.
