All,
I am curious as to why some modern coins are not released for circulation but have been offered to buy from the mint in uncirculated condition some in sets or some by themselves.
Will we ever get the chance to find any of these in circulation:
2009 50 Pence Royal Shield Reverse 2010 50 Pence Royal Shield Reverse 2011 50 Pence WWF Reverse 2011 50 Pence Royal Shield Reverse 2010 1 Pound Belfast Reverse 2010 1 Pound London Reverse 2011 1 Pound Edinburgh Reverse 2011 1 Pound Cardiff Reverse 2010 2 Pound Florence Nightingale Reverse 2011 2 Pound King James Bible 2011 2 Pound The Mary Rose Reverse

Hi Ken, the good news is these could and in many cases certainly will end up in circulation. The bad news is I don't know when. Keep checking your change!

Hi James, The question remains, have these been minted for circulation. Anything can end up in circulation if someone breaks up a proof or mint set and decides to get rid of the extra coins by spending them. I really wish we could get information from The Royal Mint on a regular basis like we can get from the US mint. For example at end of October 2011: All we can find is The Royal Mint mintages figures for the time period up to 31-Dec-2010 revised in March 2011. 2009 50 Pence Royal Shield Reverse 2010 50 Pence Royal Shield Reverse 2010 1 Pound Belfast Reverse 2010 1 Pound London Reverse 2010 2 Pound Florence Nightingale Reverse None of these appear to have been struck for release into general circulation since they don't appear on the mintage figures report but the 2011 dated Olympic 50 pence coins are shown. So would be nice if we could find out what has been struck and actually released into circulation so we are not going through a useless exercising looking for a needle in a haystack to only discover that the needle was never and will never be in the haystack. Haha, more Grant and Johnson than the individual 25 cent coins, that's crazy!

Hi Ken, many of these coins will be minted for circulation - i.e. will not just arrive in circulation from broken up collections. I can't give you current figures on the quantity of coins in circulation right now, but I don't think any of the ones you mention are out yet.

Regarding the US mintage figures, what process the US mint decides to use to determine the number of coins will probably always be a mystery to us. Probably the same for any mint but at least for The Royal Mint we have James who can try to get us some information.

I visit the UK in a frequent basis. When I was there, in a limited time, I go to those modern-style arcades near Westminister and Chinatown. There are some coin-operated machines there, and those lovely machines that gives you 1 Pound and 50p coins. I put a couple of 20 Pounds bills for 1 Pounds and 50p's and search through them. So far, I found 2008 Coat of Arms, 2009 and 2010 Uncirculated or AU 1 Pounds, along with 1988 1 Pound, many commemoritive or good shape 50p's and even some Jersey and Guernsey coins by this method. Strangely, I couldn't find one 2008 50p Britannia in London. After a while, I went to a small city close to Wales, and in three days, I found four 2008 50p Britannias in change there. I assume, some coins are just scarce in some areas and maybe more common in some others.

I was in Preston (nice above head height) when the olympic 50ps came out, loads of fencing ones and very difficult to get others. Probably just the way they are distributed through the banks!

This is not a knock against James for all of his help but I do find it ironic that we can find out the following: The Type-23 frigate has a capacity of 32 Seawolf and eight Harpoon missiles but was only armed with the four missiles which are fired in pairs therefore allowing it only two rounds to fire. Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...xzz1ed4hHWzOWhich to me would seem more a state secret then if any 2009 Royal Shield 50 pence coins have been made for circulation. Maybe the other government departments should take a lesson from The Royal Mint since The Royal Mint seems to not suffer from leaks of information. Ken
