So this is different and I have a 1959 penny, great condition for a circulated penny of that age, in fact the lines of the queens hair are all easily visible.

What makes this penny unique though is that it is not copper. This penny has the luster and color of a modern day nickel or dime.

I'd like to pick your brains, my first impression is that it may have been plated by someone after leaving the mint.

Its the great condition of the coin that leave me hoping this is something more.

Thoughts?

I have a dozen or so plated coins: gold, silver, copper, nickel and tin plated. Interesting, but not worth much. Pennies, 10 centimes, quarter annas, one double, etc. Some official, some unofficial.

I have even had a sterling silver Australian Florin of 1940 gold plated myself. Why? I thought it would be fun!

The MOST interesting in my collection is a gold plated Antoninianus of Postumus in 'as struck' condition. The gold plating has the potential to preserve the coin permanently. With the radiate head, the first imagination is to think of it as a BINIO, or double aureus. Unfortunately, it ain't. The coin itself is genuine enough, though.

What is the weight of your coin? Perhaps you can post a photo for us?

One of my coolest plated coins is a 1969 voyageur nickel dollar that someone had gold plated, a neat conversation piece.
