Hi all. I'm a newcomer to UK coins, but am confused on the date numeral spacing on Victoria pennies.

I have two 1874 examples. Both appear to be "wide date", in the sense that they do not look like the narrow date photo shown in this thread:

(Specifically, the narrow date shown there seems to be smaller vertically too. I know what the narrow dates look like on halfpennies too.)

Anyway, on my two wide date examples, one date is noticably wider than the other.

Is it common to have numeral spacing varieties within the same "wide date" variety? If so, is it worth holding on to both of these examples, or should I just keep my best one?

thanks!

Sometimes a variety is limited to a single die out of many used in any particular year to strike a specific coin. It sounds like you may have one legitimate wide date, and another that is a slightly wider than usual due to the individual die used. Basically, it means both are varieties, but not the same variety.
