I need some help with identification of a medal/coin encased in an acrylic paperweight. The owner of this item sent me the following pictures. She says the medal/coin is the size of a half dollar, the edges are NOT reeded, & the paperweight is marked $100, Hong Kong & 1 ounce gold.

I've done a web search & haven't found anything like it. I haven't seen it in person but strongly suspect it is not gold because the figures lack detail. We could always cut the acrylic off & test it but would like to have an idea that it could be something before we go down that road.

I have seen 2 or 3 of these lately, and suspect that lots more will soon appear as the Olymics approach. My rule of thumb is if you can't touch it don't buy it.

Can't go wrong with that advice. Even if I got an ID of this coin in gold I'd still have to cut it open to test. The owner doesn't want it cut open unless there's a decent chance it's the real deal. They like it as a paperweight....but not enough to keep it if it's gold.
