Ok, so I see in proof coin albums there are spots for regular coins and for the Special Mint Set coins. How do you tell them apart? I'm assuming you can't. Were there uncirculated coin sets for those years along with the SMS? That would seem really dumb to me, because they are the same coin, right?

I currently have 65-67 filled, but not the SMS spots. I figured I would just buy the SMS set on ebay as they are pretty cheap.

Is there any difference between the two, and what has everyone else done as far as acquiring these?

Thanks

SMS coins from 1965-1967, while identical to business strikes in terms of metallic content and the lack of a mintmark, most definitely look different. While not "proof" coins per se, they do have a proof-like appearance and it's very noticeable when you compare a SMS coin to a regular uncirculated one. I keep both varietes of Kennedy halves in my Dansco myself, but to each their own.

The higher end MS and a lower end SMS are indistinguishable to me, so I bought the SMS sets intact and broke them apart.

The early strikes do, but they got more strikes out of the die pair than they would for proof, so later strikes are just like business strikes. I have seen them with full cameo, proof-like strike; and I have seen some (like the 1965 set I bought) that look like a normal mint set.
