Hello, I currently have some scrap silver coins I am going to sell. Hopefully, I will turn a bit of profit. I am looking at taking some of the funds and purchasing some Canadian Maple Leafs. I know of APMEX, Goldline, and of course E-Bay. Might anyone know of other sources with competitive prices?

You missed a very good bargain a few weeks ago from APMEX. Very low premium and they were going for around $34. They do this through out the year. Fast forward a week or two and they are back up over $40 again. I like this place, when they say they have them they have them and ship them fast in very nice condition. http://www.silvertowne.com/c-296-canada.aspxNot a big fan of Gainsville only becasue on various sources they don't get high markets for service or quality.

I will add of course the spot price was lower but the bargain was the extremly low premium on the Maple.

Took a fast look at AMPEx , they have decent lower premiums on both the ASE and Maples.

The problem for little guys like myself are shipping costs. It seems like $10-$12 is the normal going rate so you need to buy quite a few to make it worthwhile.

Yes, that was a good sale, both for the low premium and for the reasonable silver spot price at the time. I was fortunate enough to be able to buy some Maples during that sale. They are beautiful coins and a nice addition to any silver bullion collection. Quote: The problem for little guys like myself are shipping costs. Yes, shipping can certainly add to the cost of buying on-line. APMEX is an excellent supplier in that they often have desirable products that other vendors do not. They do charge $20-25 shipping for most of the orders that I have made through them, though, so ordering enough to spread that cost out a bit seems to work best.

If you are buying in bulk $20 shipping is not so bad. If you are buying one ASE, their minimum charge of $8.95 is very steep. I did have my virtual cart loaded up at gainesville coins today; (1) ASE, (1) Maple, (1) Taku, (1) Philharmonic, and (1) Kukaburra. I was watching the spot price fall and ready to click "purchase" once the price was right, but it never got to my "buy" mark.

www.providentmetals.com
I have spent thousands there.....They just received them, I got five total for 32.95 a piece + 8.95 shipping.
Arrived in less than five days. I highly recommend that company above all others.

Quote: I highly recommend that company above all others. Yes, Provident Metals is a good on-line vendor. I have purchased silver bullion items from them a few times and have been satisfied with the results each time. I have also had good experiences with APMEX. They are not the cheapest vendor but they are one of the best, IMO. Their selection cannot be beat, although their shipping time when paying by easily verifiable personal check could be better. My 3rd on-line vendor is SilverTowne. I really like their 5-oz silver bars but have not had the best experience with them lately. Don't know if that was a 1-time problem or what but it did dampen my enthusiasm for buying from them.

I thought one of the coolest things visiting Canada was that one can buy silver maple leafs and gold at most of the major banking institutions right there on the spot. I do agree I love the look of the maple leafs, but currently dont own any.

Maple Leaf silver coins are very nice looking coins. They are a little smaller in diameter than an ASE but they are thicker to make up for it. They have a very solid feel in the hand in addition to their great looks and worldwide recognition as a coin of good value. I was able to get a few tubes of them about a month ago when silver prices were down and APMEX was running a low premium sale on them. It is interesting that they come in plastic tubes of 25 coins each and not the 20 coin plastic tubes in which ASEs come.

Thanks for all the replies. I will have to look at Gainesville and Providentmetals. I already knew about APMEX. As for the Maple Leaf versus the American Eagle, I personally like the Canadian Maple Leafs a bit more. For one, they are .9999 pure silver where the AME is .999 silver. Seeing both run about the same price, I will go for the Maple Leafs. Also, I just like the finish on a Maple more than that of an AME. I just think they are nicer looking coins. Finally, I think the current volume of 2011 AMEs may lead to them being viewed more and more as just plain bullion and thus move the $3-$4 higher premium over bullion down.

There's nothing stopping any of us from buying both Maples and ASEs. I have both in my bullion collection and appreciate the variety that the Maples add to an otherwise all-US coin collection.
Whether the coins are 999 or 9999 doesn't really matter, though, as both Maples and ASEs contain exactly 1 troy ounce of pure silver. I suppose that a very tiny extra weight of 999 is needed to provide the same troy ounce of 9999 but without a very sensitive balance, none of us could tell the weight difference.
