This is a 1787 "Half Penny". None were supposed to have been minted that year. I found on line references to counterfeits made at the time. Do people think this might be one? Would anyone care to hazard a guess on the value?

This one is a Machin's Mills issue, catalogued as Vlack 17-87B.

Values on these are pretty unpredictable. Occasionally they sell for high retail prices, but usually sell relatively low at auction.

Thanks for the info. It was mixed in with a lot of conventional half pennies. It looks like the only one that is a countemporary counterfeit, although there are some from the 1740s with pretty amazing die cracks. I will try to get some pictures later to post.....they almost seem too large to be from a government mint at the time.

"Non regal" issues are fairly common. I often come across them in bulk lots of old British coppers as well. I sold one of the coin you posted about a year ago, it was in much worse condition than yours is, but still did a little over $20.
