1787 Contemporary Counterfeit? Half Penny

Smallcentguy Pillar of the Community Canada 1984 Posts	Posted 11/17/2011 6:14 pm This is a 1787 "Half Penny". None were supposed to have been minted that year. I found on line references to counterfeits made at the time. Do people think this might be one? Would anyone care to hazard a guess on the value? Report this Post to the Staff

Numismat Pillar of the Community United States 1666 Posts	Posted 11/17/2011 8:56 pm This one is a Machin's Mills issue, catalogued as Vlack 17-87B. Values on these are pretty unpredictable. Occasionally they sell for high retail prices, but usually sell relatively low at auction. Report this Post to the Staff
Smallcentguy Pillar of the Community Canada 1984 Posts	Posted 11/19/2011 4:17 pm Thanks for the info. It was mixed in with a lot of conventional half pennies. It looks like the only one that is a countemporary counterfeit, although there are some from the 1740s with pretty amazing die cracks. I will try to get some pictures later to post.....they almost seem too large to be from a government mint at the time. Report this Post to the Staff
Numismat Pillar of the Community United States 1666 Posts	Posted 11/20/2011 5:10 pm "Non regal" issues are fairly common. I often come across them in bulk lots of old British coppers as well. I sold one of the coin you posted about a year ago, it was in much worse condition than yours is, but still did a little over $20. Report this Post to the Staff
