k so this one confuses me, is it a proof? or just an uncirculated? sorry for posting so many nickels but I like them and I'm trying to learn how to grade them better by eye

also this coin has a weird (toned?) look to it.

the coin exhibits lots of luster but this example does not like the scarce few "proof" examples that were minted in 1967 and included in Special Mint Sets. These look like proofs and can have cameos- they are also, more often than not nicked and dinged. Based on what I think I see in the photo, I think this example would grade out at MS-63 or MS-64 depending on the strength of the strike.

I would think this is a regular uncirculated Jefferson nickel and not a special mint set specimen because of the lack of detail. I have looked at a lot of SMS nickels and I don't recall ever seeing any 1965 1966 or 1967 nickels with that little detail. It is not circulation wear, it is wear on the die that produces the coin. I think it is a late die state MS63+ as well.

Wow that's a really worn planchet. Decent looking coin though. Welcome to the Nickel bandwagon.
