Hello,

I have this off center Lincoln Cent that I bought when I was a kid. I was doing some research to see if it might be worth a few bucks when I noticed that all of the examples I find online while off center still have the coin's design on the front and back.

The coin I have only has the design on the front, the back is blank. I read that in the modern minting process it's impossible to only get a design on one side.

So I wanted to know if what I have is a genuine mint error. Can this type of strike happen where one side is blank?

I think it's a real error. What I think has happened, is that when your coin was struck, there was still a coin in the press, possibly stuck in the collar. So when your coin was struck, it was not in the collar, resulting in the off center strike, and since there was a coin between your coin and the reverse die, it was not able to form the reverse image on your coin. In your picture, the area on the reverse looks like it has some sort of mushy image, which would be consistant with what I think happened. Or I could just be seeing things. I'm sure one of the more expert people on here have an exact term for what your coin is, but I'm confident it is a real error.

This is an off-center, uniface strike. Your coin was struck on top of a planchet.

Thanks Mike, now that I know the term uniface, it's pretty easy to find pertinent info.

Excellent coin! I'd say it's worth more than a few bucks. It's more than just off center AND it has a full date. I'd speculate is worth more like $30+.

Thanks Thad, I appreciate the appraisal. I'm probably going to list it on ebay soon and see what happens.

And it's COPPER too! Which I (and possibly many others) prefer over zincolns (however error zinc pennies may have the probability of being more rare, better production control), hmmm. Nice Lincoln! It's always nice to have something that not everybody has!
