I am new to the collecting thing and I was just surprised by my quarters that I was sorting through. The change bucket yielded big handfuls of State Quarters and one silver 1943. I was looking through the modern stuff and then picked up the silver quarter. Have y'all ever noticed that silver has a silky feel? It's also heavier and colder than the State Quarters. I know you should only pick up a coin by the edges but this quarter has no collector value and I actually touched the face (gasp), an enjoyable tactile experience.

I have read about the sound of some coins helping to determine certain things about them, but bouncing or tapping seems like a no-no. I think tasting and smelling are probably not helpful either. Visually some of the older designs are pleasing, ie. the Walking Liberty half dollar.

I thought I'd share these observations because I realized that sort, sort, sort was getting to be a lot like work. I guess the hunt for and finding a certain coin is another enjoyable aspect of coins, I don't really have a want list yet though. Connecting coins to history is interesting.

What do you find enjoyable about coins? Am I nuts for my quarter realization? Probably old hat for all you, my newbieness must be showing.

I have certainly connected my collection to history.
One part of my collection, which numbers about 400 coins, is an illustration of World hiatory, over the last 2,500 years.

With overland travel fom India to Europe my collection has to me at least, relevency to that travel.

That means this part of my collection has coins from ancient Greece, Rome Byzantine, ancient and medieval India, China, early Islamic, Europeasn dark age and rennaissance coins, Spanish America, milled coins and a few World coins of the 18th and 19th centuries. It has taken me about 40 years to get the collection to this point.

I need to be a member of the CCF to provide specialist opinion in each of these areas of numismatics. I am a generalist.

Tasting is out, but smelling is plausible. Some people claim to be able to smell the difference between silver and other metals. Of course, they're not really smelling the actual silver, rather it's the volatile organometallic compounds created by a chemical reaction between the silver and the oil in their fingers... but that's a technicality.

That, to me, is the most interesting part of this hobby.

If you are caring about more than the date, condition, and value, then you are on the path to possibly becoming a numismatist and not merely a coin collector.

(I hadn't noticed a silky feeling but the silver coin feels heavier because it is and because silver is about 20% denser. It feels cooler because silver is a better conductor of heat and being denser it will absorb more heat from your fingers faster.).

Wait until you get in to the early coins and you start noticing that different coins of the same date and denomination have differences in the desings.
