I was walking past the grocery store bank office today and I noticed they had a coin counter there, just around the corner from the Coinstar machine. I looked into the reject hopper and it was chock full of assorted coins. It had to have been 2-3 inches deep with an even mix of various coins.
It was too much for me to snag and feel OK about it, I was estimating it was $20 or more. If it was a buck or so I would not have felt bad about it...
I asked the teller at the bank counter if anyone had used the machine recently and she said yes, a lady had been there 5 minutes ago turning in coin. I told her what I saw and she came around and looked at it. She said the lady was a regular customer and had deposited her coin stash. She asked if I was going to take it and I said no, but could we run it through the machine and deposit it to the lady's account like she had intended. We did and it turned out to be $30 and change.
The teller told me the lady was elderly and probably didn't think to check the reject bin.
I didn't go through any of the coins but it didn't look like there was anything interesting in it. My guess is she just fed it too fast.
BTW, this TCF grocery store branch machine was labeled to show an 8.9% take for non-customers and no fee for customers. The Coinstar machine 20 feet away was 9.9%. (and no coins in the reject bin...)

That was nice. I can umderstand taking a few but that might have been alot for the old lady. You should have looked for silver and replaced it with regular coins. Let us know if something good happens to you.

That was a good deed. Unless she looks and finds two deposits for coins, the customer may not even realize it.

I would have had to scan for Silver. First thing I thought of when I read the beginning was.. Its all silver. lol That was a very nice thing you did. It was very smart to run it back through the counter and have it deposited into her account. If you had just walked away, whos to know if the teller wouldn't just keep it. Not saying she would have, just a lot safer. Smart quick thinking! Now when ever you see an elderly lady at the coin counter you'll wonder if that's her.

That's a nice thing to do. If I had seen any silver coins in the bunch I probably would have taken them and replaced them with a clad coin, but only because in that situation it would have been deposited as a regular dime or quarter anyway.
