Hello everyone,

Can you tell me if this coin is genuine? And is it more valuable than just 1 oz gold?

Thank you in advance

Can't help you out on the "genuine" part.....

but Numismedia says it's worth around $2000.....1oz of gold is around $1750.

I cannot comment on authenticity based on such small pictures, but it certainly has the slightly-chattery look I would expect of such a coin. As LowLife mentions, definitely worth more than melt value if real, but not a great deal more.

I don't see anything that makes me think it is fake, but scans of coins always look strange so I can't be certain. I'd recommend taking it to a local coin shop and asking the people there. You probably don't want to take any offer they might make without doing some more research first.

I can't say for sure from the pictures but nothing says fake to me.

Thank you everyone,

I just wanted to make sure. I've bought today for about $ 1515 :-)
Seems like it was pretty nice deal.

It looks genuine and is worth well over $1515 if it is.

It is a common date so weight and dimensions are usually enough to confirm authenticity. It should weigh 33.4 grams, be 34mm in diameter, and about 2mm thick at the rim.

I love the old Double Eagles.
Someone must have been needing cash to let it go for 1515
I hope it was someone you know.

Ok guys,

I finally received the coin and made my own, hopefully better quality photos of it. Check it out. Does it look OK? Worth sending to PCGS or NGC? The one thing I'm afraid of is the edge of the lower part of the eagle side... What do you think?

Caferacer311,
Thanks, I really like this forum

Looks authentic and even if its a fake its still gold if it weighs out correctally...as they made some fakes out of gold(for that coin) in that era

Nothing really stands out in my opinion that may indicate it as a fake. I would say you made a nice grab. Congratulations!

All gold should be TPG IMO, too many awesome fakes out there. I've seen some that fooled some of the top dealers during the ANA Summer Seminar course back in the 80's, check out the "Omega" Saint Gaudens Double Eagles they are so well made that the counterfeiter had to make a mark on the coins so he knew it was a fake. Some fake gold pieces are amazing, I had a $5.00 liberty that looked even better than an original coin, in fact that was why it caught my eye, ANACS confirmed it, the denticles were too perfect, the gold content was right on, the weight was within 1/10 gram of a real coin, I ended up melting it down, wish I had kept it, don't even have pictures either. A friend of mine was a grader at two of the TPGs he said they got a lot of fakes in, some very deceiving and well crafted. So when buying gold I only like certified coins or at least I only buy from a reputable dealer and get a guarantee that means something.

To add this coin posted looks okay, I see nothing that cries out fake.
