That is not an XF grade. VF at best. The cheeks are flat. Great strike thought. That coin was a BLAZING beauty when it was still in mint condition.
The wheat kernels are worn as well.

Help me out here, guys - I'm just learning to grade Lincolns. Look at the cheek just southwest of the eye, and the jawline. See how the cheek sharply drops off there? The cheek itself seems almost perfectly flat.
This does not fit the pattern of "wear" in the series I'm familiar with. The transitions I mention should be rounded from wear, not sharp, and the more wear, the more rounded the whole thing should be.
According to Halperin's How to grade US Coins, the details I called out on the obverse are the highest points of the strike. It makes me want to conclude that this is not, in fact, a worn excellent strike but a relatively unworn and very flat strike. Perhaps from a fresh die, but (look at the area around the ear, too) I don't think that detail was ever there.
Help?

I purchased my 1917D Type 2 SLQ and 1924D SLQ from him at our clubs coin show last month. Nice guy and can't complain about the deal I got which I thought was very fair considering what they were selling for on ebay IF you could find one. I didn't realize it was the same guy until I scrolled down to the bottom of the description and recognized his shops name. The add says 7 day returns if you get it and don't like it.

I agree with the points SuperDave made, and I too would like to understand the wear on this Lincoln. Why is the cheek almost completely flat? What's up with this coin?

Lol well I obviously do not know. But apparently it has been a mutual agreement that I have over paid. Might just return it and call it quits on this coin..bummer :/

I don't think you over paid. It is a very attractive coin and would look nice in any collection. Everyone wants to get a great deal, say you paid $5 for it there would be dancing fruit in the streets. But to pay near FMV (whatever that is) is fine. I have plenty of coins in my collection that I "overpaid" or didn't get a great deal, but that doesn't matter to me. And after looking again at the photos, this coin has more upside than downside to the VF grade I gave it. Your assessment of the coin in hand will always trump any grades you get from photos.

I'd say VF30. You paid VF money for a VF coin. Nothing wrong with that.

I remember reading in one of the grading guides that the ANA uses for their correspondence course(can't remember which one exactly but I think it may have been the Grading Mint State Coins) and being told by the instructor at the Detecting Counterfeit & Altered Coins course at the World's Fair of Money last year that wear often shows up as the flat surfaces and weak strike usually shows up as the more rounded surfaces. So the areas that SD had mentioned, I see those as wear rather than strike. I don't think you did bad. You paid a fair price for a nice coin. I would probably give it a VF-25/30.

I agree, you say you paid VF price for the coin and the census says its a VF coin, not sure what makes you feel as you over paid unless you were looking to get a "deal" on the coin. If you were looking to score then you will probably be disappointed according to the ones that knows the series, but if you were just wanting to pay a fair price then I think you did alright

I think you did well on this. Not a bad grade for the coin, and it is one most people need to complete the LWC collection. Look at it this way it doesn't look cleaned so I think in this case you will make out in the long run!
