Today I went to Capital One to use their coin counting machine. I didn't have very much to cash in. The trash can right next to the machine had a few plastic bags that were closed, and one of them had a small pile of coins in it. I opened it and it was all foreign coins. There were a few Canadian coins (1964 nickel which is 99.9% nickel, two quarters and three dimes), there was a half penny dated 1914. I don't know what country it's from but it says on one side "GEORGIVS V DEI GRA:BRITT:OMN:REX FID:DEF:IND:IMP:"

And I found a coin from 1926 that says on it "MAGYAR KIRALYSAG". I have no idea what country that coin is from either. I'll see if I can find anything on Google.

Now for the best find, an 1865 Two-cent piece! I found it shield side up and first thought it was a Shield nickel. I was able to tell it's an 1865 from the top of the 5. The coin is pretty smooth but the date is barely readable. The top half of all four numbers in the year seem to be visible, but the bottom are all nearly gone, plus "In God We Trust" is almost faded completely. You can still make out "United States of America" and the number 2, but the word "Cents" is also pretty faded.

This is officially the oldest coin I've ever found in circulation. It beats the 1895 Indian Head cent from a McDonalds drive through that I got in September 2010. I will try to upload pictures tomorrow. Sorry to the moderators if this is the wrong section.

Great Finds, just so you know, the "Magyar" coin is Hungarian.

And the half penny is British. Cool finds, though I don't understand the context, you found the coins in a pile in a trash bin, now that's lucky.
Rest in Peace

I found a 1920 LWC this week in my husband's change -- yep, I go through all his money! You beat me by a mile, but I won't complain, I'll just keep looking.

my bank has their counting machine in the back so you have to give them your jug (or whatever) and they take it back there and then give you cash, they do give you everything that was rejected though but this type of thing doesn't happen there

I tried to take a picture but my camera apparently doesn't focus or do very good close ups. The pictures come out blurry if I try to take a picture of something up close. I'm using a FinePix A350 in case anybody knows how to work those.

You can use a scanner for taking coin photos. I have a webcam where you can turn the lens for fine adjustments. A lot of people buy macro photography equipment which can be pretty expensive. I know I can't afford it.

A loupe in front of the lens sometimes works.

Nice find! You can find almost anything in the coin rejects so long as its half dollar sized or smaller (anything bigger gets caught in the collection basin). Silver, old foreign coins, Three Cent pieces and even large cents pop up occasionally. Keep searching, your sure to find more!

I looked up your camera, on the back use the macro button (click to see where the macro button is). When in macro mode it will focus on items that are as close as 6 cm away.
