How can we tell if a silver coin has been dipped or cleaned?

If done correctly you cannot tell, it is only when it is done in correctly IE left in the acid solution to long, not rinsed throughly or correctly,

Most of the time either scenario above will have either removed the luster from the coin leaving it flat ,, or stained the coin ,either way it is quite noticable once you have a seen a few.

There are some here who have experiance with dipping coins, perhaps they will jump in with a more complete answer. My answer is if I even suspect a coin has been dipped then I pass on it.

Blast-white usually means dipped on older coins. Lack of luster is also a telltale sign, that dead look. I've heard stories from back in the 80's of dealers filling bathtubs with dip and bags of morgans, then using broomsticks to stir 'em.

One good indication that I have found is a total lack of luster around the lettering on the outside edge, while the fields have good luster. On the Morgan dollar for example, you will see what looks to be small tarnished circles around each individual star.I take that as a sign of cleaning.
Then there are others that look like someone took a wire brush to that are pretty obvious.

I have been trying to learn about cleaning since I started collecting coins.
Many times it is very difficult, and I rely on some people that I can trust.
One way that I have found is to compare the color to other coins and try to see if the (new) coin looks unnatural, is too white, et cetera.

Thanks for the feedback guys, I really appreciate it. I'm sure I've bought dipped Morgans and Franklins unknowingly. Some of my pieces are just too shiny. I'll examine them closely for the telltale signs described above. I''ll have to be more conscious of this going forward. There's so much to watch for when buying coins, but I think if we're conscious of over grading and spotting cleaned coins, we're ahead of the game. Thanks again. TS

BTW hadleydog, if that story is true that's pretty scary stuff!
