I am looking at this coin and am trying to undercut a bit from what its actually worth..I dont really see it being XF but overall its a nice looking coin from what I can see.

Any suggestions? Since I am pretty new, you guys really help me a lot!

I believe this is going to be a hard question to answer. It is usually asked "what is this coin worth and what do you think is a fair price" your question makes it sound like you are trying to get a rip and that may turn people off from giving advice. If it were me I would offer what the coin was worth to me if I didn't agree with the sellers price and they either took it or they didn't, but I never try to rip a seller off because I wouldn't want someone to try and rip me off if I was selling. Everyone wants a deal but they usually either bid on a coin what they feel its worth to them and if they get it cheaper than that price they are fine with it because they were willing to pay what they thought was fair,or in the BIN with Make Offers, they offer what they think is fair. They don't go into it trying to make a rip, they try to make it fair for both parties. At least this is how I try to conduct myself and would hope others did as well

What I am saying is that I want to pay Fair Market Value for the coin..Undercut what he is selling it for. I guess I worded that wrong, but we are all trying to get good deals. 90% of sellers pay much less than they are selling for. Most pay just melt for silver; at least the sellers from my area do. Then they jack the price up for us Numismatics..

FYI - an online retailer I have used, lists a 1911-S XF-40 for $91.50 and VF-35 for $88.50
their prices are a little high, but not much

EDIT - another higher priced retailer lists XF for $145

It all comes down to what you are willing to pay. If it's a coin you desire, place a reasonable offer (only you can decide that), if it's accepted, great, if not, there will always be other 11-s Lincolns around. Be patient and enjoy the search.

From my limited expierence with best offer deals on ebay, sellers will take 10-15% off without question.
That puts you at $75-$80, still a bit higher than I would pay; but I'm not aspiring to own this coin,
and there in lies the crux of your question.

What are you willing to pay and how bad do you want it. It is a desired date and tough to abtain coin in this condition.

Seems too simple but that is what it boils down to.

I don't like the term "undercut" when it comes to numismatics, I prefer "haggling". Bargain with him, try to get yourself a better deal, ultimately, the item being haggled over is only worth as much as the buyer is willing to pay. It does not cost anything to haggle, except your (and their) time.

Like others have said, another coin will come along if you lose out on this one, but I always try to take in the overall eye appeal and how it matches the others in my particular set. Often a coin that is graded similarly to others in my sets may have a completely different "look" to them and still others may fit in perfectly with a set I have. If the coin is in a grade that I desire and has the luster or toning or wear (or whatever criteria you consider) that fits in with my set then I may pay a bit of a premium because I want that coin a little more than one that doesn't mesh with my set as well. I don't want a coin to stick out just because it was a good deal.

So I would come up a price that you desire to pay for the coin on an individual basis and then if you place that bid/offer you can sleep easy knowing that you didn't miss out on a "deal", nor did you miss out on a nice coin for your collection at a fair price.

In BIN's I leave room for 10%, so if the price is close to what I would pay I would offer 85-90% of that to start the negotiatings. Lowballing is an insult IMO. Most times I won't even counteroffer lowball offers on BIN.

I do not low ball offers. I think that you guys are misunderstanding me and think I am trying to rip people off and such. I guess my wording came off wrong. I am not a scammer, cheater, lowballer, or what not. I am an honest, low income student that is attempting to make a good set with the money that I do have. It is tough to do it and I am a very picky collector, but I feel like I might as well not even collect if I am going to make a terrible set. It sort of defeats the purpose.

I've been reading most of your threads and I no your not a scammer or lowballer, I understand you just want to find a good deal on coins...arnt we all...but anyways dont get disapointed about making a good set, coin collecting takes time and money so have patience, if you didnt get a deal on a coin dont worry, youll find a better deal, it wasnt meant to be. Your 20, and a low income student, I'm 18 going to start school and have a part time job, just save your money and forget trying to start a set. Your still trying to figure out what you want to collect and what kind of sets, to me you sound confused and it may discourage you from collecting..but dont get discouraged. Start by collecting simple coins, VG pennys or Buffalo nickels just to get into collecting and learn about all the types, mints, errors key dates so on...Its good that you want to collect coins that will be an investment but work your way up to the better coins or more expensive. Would you get a Ferrari as your first car? probably not cause you have no experience with it, you have to gain experience and work your way up, just start somewhere and be happy. Like the forum says "Education is the key to a collectors success" I'm just trying to help you out for the good, just remember "you gotta start somewhere"

I know I have overpaid a time or three on coins I felt at the time I just couldn't live without. In situations like those you just have to figure out how much the coin is worth to you and go from there. I always figured since I had no plans on selling the coins I am the one who needed to figure out the coins worth. What may be worth 100.00 to one person may not even be worth 75.00 to another. I have to admit when I first read your thread it sounded like you were trying to get a rip instead of paying what the coin was worth because of the words you used like "undercut from what its actually worth" that just sounded like you wanted to get the coin for less than you would want for it if you were the seller. If I was mistaken I want to apologize but it was the wording that brought me to that conclusion. Allot of us end up selling some coins in our collection to pay for other things even though we may not have planned on doing that when we purchased the coins and to be a seller and have someone try to get a coin for far less than its worth is just a slap in the face to the collectors that do have to sell.

Cafe and Bryan, you guys are both correct. I know that I can be very impatient at times, and I guess a lot of that sort of comes from this generation of "instant gratification." I can get ansy sometimes on my collection and just think I can finish it so much quicker than I really can. Its a terrible habit that I need to fix. I guess when I stay on this forum so much, I see what everyone else is getting and it really makes me want to make my collection good. Another issue I am running into is the fact that I have such high standards with my collections and am extremely picky. This has been a major problem with me. I guess I just need to slow my collecting down and focus more on patience and enjoying the hobby. Thanks for all the help guys. I dont have many friends my age at all, that understand anything about coin collecting. A majority of people I run into at coin shows or stores are at least 30-50 years older than me haha..

Its ok to have high standards but dont let that interfere from buying or collecting other coins, coins arnt always perfect, not everyone can buy perfect coins, some are cleaned some are damaged, just be happy and apprciate what you come across because alot of people would enjoy what you have, collect as much as you can cause the price will always go up..up..up.. and awayyyyyy...its ok to be picky just dont pass up the good deals
