I don't think you all reallize how bad they were. Te good news is that 53 of them are going to be salvaged from the lot, via my conservation efforts. Yep, that means cleaning, but they're good practice pieces for dealing with all manner of corruption, namely verdigris.

Quote: Bury them in a park...someone will MD them and still enjoy finding them. Quote: Hummm....you should have at least spent them. Sometimes coins like this are enough to perk a new collector when they get it back in change. Not one, but two things that would have been preferable to putting them in the waste bin.

Well, you can't really expect a guy to take time and bury things. They could have been spent at retail stores. If they were bad enough that they were barely identifiable (and many clerks probably haven't seen an IHC period) then you could have just brought em to the bank. I still think you could have just given them to some kids. If that would be too awkward, an idea might be to literally leave them sitting on a lunch table at a local elementary school. The kids would find them and hopefully get excited. Well, it's done now I suppose. I know I've contributed to the extension of this thread and am doing so again right now, but I'm amazed this thread has made it to page 2 and is still alive. edit....I forgot that many schools around the country are all indoors and especially during winter there are no outdoor lunch tables you'd have access too. Things are different in CA.

I should really put my money where my mouth is, so I'll drop a bunch of LWCs over there; I know they'll get a kick out of it.

Or you could have bought two MS-65 1909 IHC's, put them at the ends of a shotgun roll, put the trash pennies in the middle, and ebay'ed as: "Genuine original bank roll! Unsearched! Possible MS roll! Wow WOW Opportunity of a lifetime... Possible 1909-S VDB LWC's inside!" ROFL

So are they totally gone now, like 100% irretrievably thrown away? Or are they just sitting in a trash bin?

The coins are irretrievably gone. There's an old saying .... that thing keeps "coming back like a bad penny". Nobody will have to be saddled with buying them again. These were common dates .... millions left out there. Had I taken them to the bank, they would have sent them to the treasury dept to be disposed of anyway. I was able to salvage a lot of the bunch, including some that had a lot of verdigris on them. I can give those to kids and those might spark their interest, because they are recognizable for what they are.

Chancellor: So much for "honesty being the best policy", eh? It's a good thing this is an online forum and not a group that meets in person. You might have been pilloried for your crime or beaten like a runaway circus monkey!
Just the same, I would have found a use for them as well. I might have put on my oldest pair of jeans and wandered around the mall letting them fall out through the hole in the pocket. Then I could have gone up on the upper level and watched the reactions as people found them...

There are some very ugly IHC's out there. I give them away but thrashing them isn't a bad idea, they truly are junk. The kids I give them to probably loose them anyway, even they know garbage when they see it.

I do not think it would have been that bad. Some scornful looks, but nothing violent. There are worse crimes in the numismatic world, right?

Quote: or beaten like a runaway circus monkey Is this some saying that I'm not aware of? For argument's sake, who would beat a runaway circus monkey. They can be dangerous to approach and they seriously wouldn't deserve such a punishment either, especially considering the poor quality of life they've already endured in the circus. Sorry, I'm just a "borderline" animal activist.

Quote:There are worse crimes in the numismatic world, right? Exactly...I don't think anyone meant to come across harshly...somethings just don't translate well to the Web. We're just saying what we might do, if we were in that situation. And, if not for this thread...I wouldn't get the idea to seed local parks with "junk" LWCs
