Hello all, I have a question. I'm about to buy a 2006 set of ASE's, graded by ICG as SP-70, with the other 2 graded PR-70 DCAM. What would be a fair price for this? What is high end, and what is low end? I'm paying enough to say this will be my only purchase this year. Any oppinions are welcome, even those I don't want to hear. cuedude

Why an ICG set? Why not price it from NGC or PCGS? They will hold the value better.

Honestly, it's the only one I've found so far. I know there has to be others out there. When I spotted this one, it was something I decided to get. Now, the person is expecting the $$$, and I shouldn't back out. ( ebay deal) cuedude

Welcome to Coin Community, cuedude. That's the last thing you'll hear from me that you like. I believe that you are making a horrible mistake to even consider buying this set. Pricing is at the frenzy point right now, utterly unrealistic considering production volume, and the sheer number of PF70's being graded by the reputable TPG's. NGC has graded almost 16,000 2006 ASE's in PR70. Is this a rarity worth $1600 for a 3-coin set? I don't think so, especially when you can get the mint-packaged, unslabbed set for under $250 all day. I cannot imagine this price holding up in the future. ICG, as TreasHunt mentions, is not considered a major player in this arena; their slabs (although the best in the industry) do not retain nearly as much value for resale as do NGC and PCGS. I cannot, of course, tell you how to spend your money, but not a penny of mine will be thrown at this unrealistic market bubble, fueled by people who don't understand what "valuable" actually means. If you must have a set, go find one of the NGC PR69 sets on ebay for $239: http://cgi.ebay.com/20th-ANNIVERSAR...69_W0QQitemZ330068041210QQihZ014QQcategoryZ529QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem I guarantee that neither you nor I can tell the difference between PR69 and PR70, but our bank accounts can.

Is this a graded "set" or some coins mixed and matched together to form a set. It is really hard to give a good value because as TreasHunt eluded to, PCGS and NGC are really the price setters. Not that ICG isn't a capable grading service, but you would take a chance of them not being 70's with the other two from what I have learned. Only purchase this year? The year just started....I don't think I want to know what you are paying for it. Will it appreciate as much as multiple graded coins you could buy throughout the year for the same amount of money? That's the question I would ask myself. IMHO
SuperDave is right!!!! Rerren!!!!

All points well taken. This is a Numbered set. #1714 of 1975. And I just may get a hold of one of those 69 sets you suggest as well. Thanks. The $$$ are not the issue, it's the spending with recless abandon that catches ya.

I couldn't agree more with SUPERDAVE. ICG graded coins sell for far less than NCG or PCGS. Right now there is a flood of the 2006 ASE being sent to TPG and being sold on ebay and other places. If you were to wait until the frenzy subsides, the price is likely to drop.

Cuedude, was this an auction item or was it a deal worked out off of ebay? If it is off-eBay, there is no opportunity for the seller to leave you a negative feedback and you may want to consider backing out of the deal. As has been said, this is not the time to purchase these sets. I believe the prices will drop drastically.

The deal is an auction item. I'll see if I can back out though. Thanks to all for the words of wisdom. I'll let you know how it turns out.

OK, I've run it up the flagpole with the seller, let's see how it turns out.

Not true. You must be thinking of SGS.

Yep, sounds like SGS to me, but not ICG...Many include ICG in the group of upper tier TPG's.

I agree with SuperDave and I hope you and the seller can come to an agreement that will allow you to be released from the purchase contract. Good Luck and keep us posted.

Update: I wasn't able to get released from the deal, but I did get a bit of a price reduction. I'm satisfied so far. My thanks to all that put up with this newby situation. I'll post pics when I get them, and when I figure out how to scan them with the printer. Now, it's off to get a copy of picasa.

There is no "putting up with" this situation. This is why this forum exists - so that people can get opinions and help and share their knowledge and experiences. I'm glad that you got a price reduction. By the way, ICG is considered to be the 4th most respected TPG. While I have seen a number of modern coins that have been slightly overgraded by them, I have also seen a number that were very accurate. At this time, it is true that ICG does not hold value as well as PCGS, NGC, or ANACS, but that may change over time. With the changes that have taken place at ANACS, ICG may just move up in the ranks. It's worth watching...
