I havent seen a single FBL in the early years. doesn't mean they dont exist, but its goin to be really hard and expensive to find them. Later years, if you stick to MS63/64 grades, you can get them for a decent price.

My first set to finish was a 64fbl set (except the 53S). That set is fairly easy to complete and not terribly expensive at that grade with the one exception. It was a fun set to pursue and rewarding to complete.

I got most of my set from circulation 20 years ago. I'm happy with having just a circulated set. I'm just not a huge fan of the Franklin set so I personally would put my money into something different.

A FBL set of Franklins is possible and would take time and a lot of money depending on the grade you want. The 1953-S is near impossible to find with FBL's in any grade. I would recommend A Guide Book of Franklin & Kennedy half dollars by Rick Tomaska. I purchased this book yesterday at a coin show and it contains a lot of great information. Ed ANA LM-3175

Gyrene is right about that book. Any well written coin book is worth the investment as the things you learn will save you hundreds if not thousands of dollars down the line. The book is an especially great resource when it comes to evaluating the rarity of grades in certain dates. An FBL Franklin set is very doable with patience- but please get that book and read it before you start buying.

i agree.
FBL's will be grossly overpriced if you find them slabbed.
i would seek out RAW 63/64 examples. most can be had for just above melt if your patient .

NO, FBL is not a designation that is important to me. My sets have a mix of circulated coins and uncirculated coins which is fine with me.

Finished my Franklins quickly so I could move on. Not my favorite series. Heck, if it weren't for JFK assassination, we'd probably still have Franklin on our Halves (I don't consider them classic)

I finished my Franklin half dollar collection before I knew what FBL was and I have not upgraded any of them. So, I guess it is not important to me. Quote: Heck, if it weren't for JFK assassination, we'd probably still have Franklin on our Halves (I don't consider them classic) You are correct, which is why the Franklin half dollar discussions are in the 'Modern US coins' forum.

My album was completed in the 70's with circulated finds as well as some uncirculated purchases to complete it. My focus now has been a sub set of cameo proofs. I don't concern myself with full bell lines, bugs bunny's, or double dies.

I think it is really a question of price. How much do you want to spend? You should be able to get all the Franklins (circulated) for under $20 each. Some years you should be able to get UNC for under $20. As others have stated, you will pay a premium (in some case quite a bit) for the lower mintages that are UNC.
The question is do you want to spend the money for UNC and FBL? Personally, I did not. I really like the Franklins, but I've been doing a circulated set. I found a near UNC in circulation a few months back and really liked it, thus it made me attempt to find good deals on UNC when they are available.
For me, I look at it like I want to get a completed set. Then if I want to upgrade in the future, I can.
