Not buying more nice/higher end coins back when I was truly a 'rookie' in the mid-80's. Especially silver coins. Oh well at least I have a couple.

Just side searching for silver and passing over so many others by not looking at the obverse or reverse.

Which is worse?
Polishing an MS 1921 Morgan my mother gave me. I was 8 years old. Still have it after all these years!
Losing a 1921-D dime I found in circulation or roll hunting (VF). I was 9 years old. My mother gave me a replacement the following Christmas after beating myself up about it. Still have it too.

Bought a Morgan dollar from these guys http://www.belmontcoin.com/index.htm many years ago as a kid. It was advertised as Gem BU proof-like and problem free and they promised to always buy it back for what I paid. Took it back a year after purchase, they offered 1/4 of what I paid, said the coin was "whizzed" with AU detail, denied ever selling it.

If you lived in the area of Andrews AFB in MD any time until the early 90's, and were collecting, you likely knew of Goldies coin shop. Unbeknownst to me, they were thieves of a high stripe. We all found that out when the owner was arrested. Cant remember exactly for what.
So I walked in there one day with my slightly bent but otherwise XF 1909 S VDB that I found in my change for them to value for me. The guy takes it aroun behind a partition for a couple minutes and comes back with more severely bent 1909 S in lower grade and says "thats not a VDB". I said it was when I handed it to you. He laughs and says I was mistaken. NOTHING I could do about it. Nothing at all.
NEVER EVER allow someone else to take your coins (or comic books...the only other time I naively trusted someone with something valuable of mine) out of your site. Sometimes I worry over sending in coins for grading. Total paranoia there.

Wow smokeriderdon, that's crazy! I've never heard of that from a 'brick and mortar' store. I can't imagine someone staying in business with that kind of word of mouth.

I can't think of any huge mistakes I've made, but when I was a kid I didn't fully appreciate the effect of scratches, ugly spots, or other issues on the value of coins. If I had a coin that was XF grade but with a big scratch on it I would still consider it to be worth XF prices since that's what it grades as! That led me to buy a handful of coins then that I wouldn't have bought today.
