Bought food from a Chinese rest. today.
Got a nickel dated 1960...
Keep or just throw it back in circulation?

I'd keep it.
If you don't have one, well, now you do.
I figure that anything that old that isn't trashed is still collectible by somebody somewhere. Sometimes I put them in 2X2's and throw them in a box in case some day I meet some kid that would get a kick out of something that old.

Speaking of 2x2's I have been putting almost all my old coins in them. Labeling them with date/ amount (1C, 5c, 25c) etc.. as well as mint mark and any special things I see. I use the Red Book and some software for help identifying them, as well as this site. This site is a treasure trove of information on coins and bills. Just this weekend I was going through some coins my dad had found with his metal detector and came across a bi-metal coin. 1992 10 new pesos... Mexico.. I thought the center was silver... when I looked it up, I found out it was.. and it's in great shape... circulated but not worn... |

oh, what I wanted to say but forgot, was that I didn't think getting any of my coins graded was worth the price of grading. it seems it costs quit a bit to get one graded.
my oldest US coin is a 1853 3-cent silver.

Personally I wouldn't keep it in that condition. the d is the highest mintage mint for that year about 4 to 1 with about 200,000,000 made compared to 55,000,000 for Philadelphia.(which I would probably keep if acquired for face)

I tend to keep Jeff nickels from the 50's and before but have been known to toss back rough examples of older nicks. I even threw back a dateless Buffalo a while back figuring someone else might appreciate it.
While your 60 Jefferson is in remarkably good shape for a 50+ year old circulating coin, it has no more numismatic value than a current nickel. If it is in better shape than your book coin, swap it out...

I don't have a 1960-D so I will keep it.
Question is do I go through the bother of putting it in a 2x2 or should I just pick one of those folders for nickels..
I have some with pennies... in them pre 1950.

I just dumped a few kilos of coins at the bank, didnt feel anything about the non silver nickels.

I was keeping 1959 and before but I ended up with so many. I started feeling they're worthless unless high graded I would just spent that one. Unless your saving nickels. (Any date) |

Go ahead and put it in a 2X2 if you're going to keep it for awhile. The 2X2's are pretty inexpensive and it helps to keep stuff filed and organized.
After going through a bunch of 2X2's I switched to Saflips. They cost more but I can easily slide one coin out and replace it with another one. I only do that for my circulated collection though.
And as for grading -- I had a couple done but the coins had sentimental value to me and so it was mostly to protect them. (I was thinking of the day when a niece will inherit them.) But unless I thought a coin would grade at 69 or 70 I wouldn't bother -- the exception to that might be a key date.
