I recently purchased a bunch of proof sets, 1970-1992, and under a magnifying glass, I found that while I tried to avoid obviously tarnished coins, other coins looked to be in danger of becoming damaged. Several coins inside the lenses have an oily substance on them or loose felt from the packaging. So far, the coins don't appear to be damaged, but if I act quickly to clean them, I might be able to prevent future damage.

What should I do? My main goal is to keep the set together so I can sell it later. I have read around here about parting out sets when single coins get high enough in value. Would the set still have value uncracked but with one or more bad coins?

Thanks in advance.

Check your 71 to see if the nickel is missing a mint mark and the 79 SBA for a type 2.

Generally though those sets are very easy to come by so bad coins will hurt their value but it will still have some value.

Cleaning the coins will hurt the value as well depending on what you were thinking with that.

Keep the set unbroken and sell now.
Get another set later!

In this case it would have lesser value to more buyers, IHMO. But there are people who like toned coins so if you were to sell, you might get market value. Value is what someone else is willing to pay for it no matter what any publications say.

If you are keeping the sets for yourself and it bothers you, sel has an excellent suggestion.

Sell, sell, sell, but leave them intact.
