Alright, I've been eyeing this 5 oz nugget/beast for a long, long time. With gold dipping recently, I really want it more than ever to add to the collection. I know some have said buy several 1 oz's, get some fractional etc but I have all that stuff. This is a long term investment / Christmas gift to myself. I don't have/own/hold this masterpiece and I really want to.

Yes or No?

Thoughts?

Any advice / guidance appreciated.

Thanks.

This is what matters. If you want it and have the means....and won't get in trouble with wife/husband...I say go for it!

must say though, I've purchased the 100g silver pamp suisse bars before (similar size to 5oz gold bar) and they are not as nice in the clear, softer packages as the 1 oz in the hard blue plastic assay cards. Felt... cheaper for a lack of a better word. Packaging surprisingly made a difference because you don't want to break it open and handle the pm first hand. Hope it's not the same with the 5oz gold bar

Ah yes, marriage. No I am not married, 30+, single male, no debt, no kids (that I know of), and work my tail off in which work rewards well. I am using this time in my life to "save up & invest up" as much as possible. Thanks for the comments so far.

I would rather have smaller pieces especially in gold. I would go to a coin show and buy 5-1 oz coins. Someone would be willing to work a good deal on the premium if you had cash and you were buying 5. Or just buy the 2 that your favorite online dealer has and get them shipped directly to you. :)

Oh yeah, and call APMEX and see if that's the best price they can do. Or at least throw in free expedited shipping.

Even though gold has dipped a bit, it is still high by historic standards. I am still a bull however.

Gold was one of the things that got me back into coin collecting. It was 6 years ago this fall that I went to a local gun show that happened to have several coin and antique dealers on the floor. One dealer was selling raw $20 Double Eagles for $550/each! I didn't pull the trigger but got the bug.

If you can afford it and want a Pamp bar, go for it. I believe gold will head over $2,000 in the next couple years. Beware of the downside to $1300-$1400 as well though.

In that case, what are you waiting for...go for it! LOL!

Trust me, once you're married and have kids, this kind of discretionary spending comes to a screeching halt!

"Honey, [kid] needs braces..."

"Honey, the garbage disposal needs to be replaced..."

"Honey, the water heater went out..."

"Honey, I'm pregnant..."

That wedding ring is the most expensive bit of gold you'll ever buy...

Rest in Peace

got lucky here. I was allowed to melt a silver maple leaf and cast our wedding bands

"Honey, I'm pregnant..." is still a shocker though

I am a little worried about gold in the short term, I do feel a bit more of a drop coming. But as always, I feel pretty confident about it in the long term.

But that being said, what a cool thing to own!
The only thing is there seems to be a decent premium on them. My last and latest local coin show, one of the vendors was selling seal pamp suisse gold bars for like 10$ over spot, and he had 3 or 4 of them.

A 240$ premium +$20 shipping just seems a little much, the more gold you get, the closer to spot it should be!
Rest in Peace

Depending on how they insure, $8000 can cost a bit to ship.

You're better off with 5 one-ounce bars than a single 5-ouncer. Think divisibility. You can't saw off a hunk of a big bar if you need to sell some gold.

It can be... unless your spouse is a career person too and makes as much or more than you do.

As to the 5-oz. bar... as others have said, if you want it and can afford it, I don't see any reason not to buy it. You can try to get it at a better price but who knows when or even if the price of gold will go much lower?

PAMP also makes a very nice 100g gold bar that is a little smaller and a little lower in price. Not sure what it would be on a per oz. basis, though.
