Another hobby of mine beside coin collecting is software programming, so I'm planning to joint both hobby and design a database to document coin collections.

So I'm asking what are you looking for in a program that would make you think to try it?

How much information should be included?

I know one feature that would be nice is having your collection tied up to a value database so in one click you would know how much its worth.

Green light thinking here, feel free to post any ideas.

First of all, welcome!

I use MS Access for my database.

I have fields for:
ID
Year
Mint Mark
Grade
Location (album, 2x2, etc, in a pull down menu)
Denomination (cent, nickel, etc.)
Type (Lincoln Wheat, Washington, etc.)
Qty
Upgrade (Yes, is this a coin to upgrade? usually as part of an album)
Priced Paid
Retail Price
Selling (Do I plan to sell? Yes or blank)
Sale Price
Notes (text field)

Many of these fields exist in a pull-down menu for that category, so filling in new coins is quite easy and quick.

Once I have these fields, it's very quick to print out reports and queries that I can take to shows, etc.
Rest in Peace

I thought there were several commercial programs out there. Seems it would be easiest to look at what's available, then figure out what needs improving.

"I thought there were several commercial programs out there."

Although I understand the concept of "why re-invent the wheel" I'm pretty sure my car is a tad better than a Ford model T.

Yes looking at commercial programs is a good starting point but that can answer only what I like, I'm looking for a more in depth look at what is useful or not, like if nobody use a upload your own images feature and are perfectly ok with a generic image of each coins than I would not spend time to create a script to upload images, by the way I'm thinking of an online database system accessible from anywhere.

I would like to be able to include my own images of the coins, love the value database.I have looked into some other programs and have used the Coin Elite demo a bit,but I really don't have my coins databased yet.Collection is starting to get a bit out of hand without it,so I should get my butt in gear and get on the ball.

Link for current silver melt price would be nice. I manually update mine every so often but it would be nice if it did it automatically.

I also created a MS Access database with content similar to The Duke. I keep information about the seller and I scan and crop all the coins in my collection. The coin pictures are linked to the database using Visual Basic programs I've written. I can retrieve and display the collection info and the pictures in a variety of ways.

Ok, it is taking shape slowly but surely so far we have (using The_Duke list as a starting point)

ID
Year
Mint Mark
Grade (I would had to this TPG yes/no if yes sub-menu -> grading company, id#)
Location (album, 2x2, etc, in a pull down menu)
Denomination (cent, nickel, etc.)
Type (Lincoln Wheat, Washington, etc.)
Qty
Upgrade (Yes, is this a coin to upgrade? usually as part of an album)
Priced Paid
Retail Price
Selling (Do I plan to sell? Yes or blank)
Sale Price
Notes (text field)

We also need capacity to upload own pictures as per RMAN4443 request

BLUESZONE suggested bullion value, this could be tied up to a bullion value database, since we know the content in each coin (weight/fineness) the program should be able to spit the minimal value of a coin based on its metal content.

cipster keeps track of the seller so a contact list (private and/or public) with subcategories like (dealer, seller, buyer, trader) would be a nice touch to add.

I can see it has being like 2 database one generic listing all the coins and major varieties by country and then a users database where you keep track of your own coins, the way I see it working is you log in, find the coin you just bought in the generic database, click on a button, a window open where you can enter all the details you want to add (price paid from who etc.) and than save it to your database. Doing a search on your database the program will pull the coin details from the generic database and the data that you added from your database.
