If you look in the clearance items on the APMEX site, you can buy ten one ounce .999 Silver rounds made from Atocha Silver for $307. It just seems like a great deal to me. I am biased because I own several silver Cob coins that were recovered from The Atocha. I love the history of Atocha Silver. To me the fact that these silver logs slept on the ocean floor for 360 years adds a bit of mystique to anything made from them.

Quote: Isn't that under spot? Not necessarily. The title of the coins for sale states, "ATOCHA 10 Coin Set - .999 Fine Silver - 1 oz Medallions," which implies that there is 10 ounces of purse silver in total. However, the actual description of the coins states as follows: Quote: These medallions are in the form of (avoirdupois) 1 ounce of .999 fine silver - troy weight is .9114 oz. each. The medallions are sealed in the original plastic from the manufacturer and may have some toning. Each set contains 9.114 troy ounces of .999 Fine Silver. I believe spot prices are listed in troy ounces, hence the discrepancy.

APMEX is a tough buy a lot of the time because their shipping price is so high. You have to buy a large quantity to even that out. I used to use Provident for a while when they came out, but now they are pretty much the same thing.

With the drop in silver prices today, APMEX is now charging $300.53 for this deal. So you're basically paying $32.97 per ounce ($300.53 / 9.114oz), that's a very good deal. By comparison you're paying $35.49 per ounce for American Silver Eagles.

Provident and APMEX are both good on-line vendors and I have purchased from both of them a number of times and would not hesitate to do so again. I agree that Provident tends to charge a few dollars less for shipping than APMEX does, though. I usually buy at least 50 ozs. at a time, so the shipping is not that big a deal. I can see that it would be for anyone buying a few ozs. at a time, though.

Let's bring this back to the top! I bit on this deal (and thanks for pointing it out!) because it's the Atocha. I remember when the whole deal went down way back when and the treasures started showing up on the market. I cannot bring myself to acquire one of the actual coins - a bit too pricey for me - but a bit over 9 troy ounces of medallions minted from the silver bars they recovered for $308 (CC price) works for me. This is the first time I've ordered from APMEX but I check the site on a fairly regular basis to see what's new and exciting. The shipping was $20, so I see what people are referring to now. I had nothing else to put with it at this time so I just bite the bullet. Still, I'm happy with the deal. Can't wait to hold them in my hot little hands in about a week! And it's more in the Silver Vault while the price is down a bit. Steve

I'm sure that you will be very pleased with your purchase and that it will make a fine addition to your collection. Well done. When they arrive...

In the end, being "happy with the deal" is all that matters. Both to the buyer and the seller. So, it sounds like a win-win.

Thanks guys. Sure, they're "just" silver medallions - bullion pieces, but how often can you pick up medallions minted from silver that was lost in a shipwreck and belonged to Davy Jones for three hundred and sixty-some years, and for not a whole heck of a lot more than melt?
And that's a lot longer than my SS Republic NGC slabbed (Shipwreck Artifact) 1860-O Seated Half spent on the ocean floor when the ship sunk in 1865 and was recovered in 2003. I DID fork out for that one! I love that coin, and I'm sure I'll enjoy owning these.

I know that this is a very old thread, but I'm trying to track down some Atocha bullion like the coins offered from APMEX. Does any one have any they'd be willing to sell or know of anyone that would be willing to sell some? Thank you very much!
