Received the final coin in my four-coin 1883 Hawaiian Silver set this morning and it's a beauty. To me it appears to border on UNC, but has a coating on it that I can't quite figure out. It almost looks like it was painted at one time. I gave it a soak in acetone and quite a bit of the substance came off after rubbing with a special cloth - yet some remains. Where it has been completely removed a gorgeous mint luster shows so I really want to continue trying to conserve it back to original state. I give the coin at least an AU and am soliciting your thoughts on the grade. Also, should this one be a NCS candidate? The last one I sent to them looked great before I sent it and came back in a NGC "Cleaned" slab! . So without further ado, here's good King Kalakaua I with every hair in his mustache bristling... Excellent looking strike on that coin PG ... I have no experience with conservation so can offer nothing besides my encouragement.

Strong AU - cant see any wear on rev - possibly light wear on beard. And congrats on completing the set. We want pics once you mount them in the Koa wood.

I don't like having to say this but I think it may come back in a cleaned slab unless it is just the pictures. I do think the coin is AU. It is a nice coin and I am eager to see the display with all the coins.

Not quite yet on the display, the guy making it (me) had his busiest season ever and is behind on everything, but pictures will come very very soon now.

By the way, I shipped it to ANACS and it came back AU (Details) "Ex-Jewelry" ... There are no marks on the coin, but I suppose the color of the coin led them to that determination. It's eagerly looking forward to a new Koa wood home..

Not quite finished display for the Hawaiian set. Need to get rid of that little chip out on the right side of the base. The coin holding part flips over to display the reverses right side up. Base is mahogany, rest is Koa.
