Just went down to the bank and bought a box of pennies from brinks. What all am I looking for in the pennies other than pre 1983 copper? What specific dates, errors etc do I need to keep an eye out for. This is only my second box of pennies and I just don't know what to try and find and or keep?

With pennies its kind of a question of how many things do you want to look for.

I find thhe Lincoln Cent Resource to be invaluable.

Are you wanting to collect errors? Or are you filling an album? I do both so I look for High Grade Zincolns and I have a accumulative list I made on an excel sheet of all known errors/varieties.

When I'm cent-hunting I keep 1 window open with Coppercoins
http://coppercoins.com/
when I see something that perks my interest, I type in the year and mintmark, and, either doubled die obverse/reverse, or RPM issue...excellent reference with all the markers for each coin....and, rough values...
As stated above, so is the Lincoln Cent Resource, has the top 50 top 100 lists....
Have fun, and good luck hunting!

Some people search for a ton of different things, because there are many things to search for. However I only look for copper, wheats, S mint cents, 1998 1999 2000 Wide AM Cents, and the 1992 d Close AM cent.

I look for family birthdays, coins to fill folder holes, key dates and error's. We also sort wheat, copper and modern Lincoln's.

Thanks for all the help so far guys, so far in my box I have found roughly 6 wheats earliest being a 1930 in pretty sorry shape. I did have one 1945 s in probably VF/XF BN. I found quite a few BU possibly Proof 1960s cents. I have saved over 300-500 copper cents so far which I think is pretty awesome.

What is melt on copper at the moment? If I were to sell those right now, what kind of profit would I bring in?

Also, is there any true profit at all in searching boxes of lincolns and nickels?
