Everytime I get on these forums, I run into a key or semi key, or even just a beatutiful coin that I need for my collection! It always makes me want to go looking for just what I see or want to continue my collection. Then, is where we run into the problem..With Christmas around the corner, and buying gifts for the childrens home, family, and girlfriend. It can be tough to continue my collection. Especially when I am riding solely on my landscaping funds from this summer and fall. Gas is crazy expensive and plus all the food and other college stuff I have. I guess there is truly no rush in collecting, but I love it more than any hobby or video game I have ever played. It truly is an addicting and fun hobby, with all the different coin variations, errors, etc to look for. So I have been thinking, maybe its time to build a set from circulation. Maybe Jeffersons, Rosy's, etc? I already have a wheats set started, and have just funded way to much cash into it at the moment and need to slow down. I also just recently bought about 3 SLQs that I really like. God knows that I cant afford a set like that right now. The problem I have with asking for coins for Christmas, is that my parents and girlfriend do not have the slightest clue on what in the world to get me. If I said I wanted a 1909 S lincoln, I would probably get one in the cheapest, worst condition possible haha..
Well anyway, I guess I am done venting. Just wish I sometimes had that full time job and could afford/enjoy my hobby a little bit more. Maybe build something one day worth something. Sometimes I think that I am running out of time to get things a bit cheaper, especially with the SLQs. They are sky rocketing in price, and the good grades seem to be slowly disappearing.

Coin collecting is a life time hobby so slow down and enjoy. As far as gifts of coins for Christmas and birthdays from non collector people how about a gift certificate from your local coin shop?,just an idea. John1

Cody, On the flip side...enjoy every minute you can not working 9-5. Enjoy the college years. I wish I could go back for just a week to that life again. Before you know it, you have a full time job, 2 kids, large mortgage and coin collecting completely goes out the window. I do manage to keep the hobby going however.
You are young, take your time...you have probably another 60 years to collect lol! I get the same way though, I want things now! Could create a budget, that might help you.

ceaton says it dead straight. You will work the bulk of your life. I have been working since I was 9. Fulltime since I was 14. Enjoy it while it lasts.

Get as much education as you can, professional school, graduate degree, etc. You already know how much responsibility and money you need to properly run an adult's life, add something expensive like coin collecting to the mix, and you are talking about good 5-figure annual income, if not 6-figures. If you are good at sales, get a sales job, the quarterly commissions can be quite lucrative, people always need to spend money, no matter how bad the economic conditions are.

When I was in college I strictly searched nickels. You never know what you might find and I always enjoyed the hunt. In time you will be done with school and you will wish you could go back and do it again.

I think building a collection from circulation is a great idea for you now. And if your family wants to contribute to your hobby/addiction they can give you books on error coins and rolls of coins for you to search...and maybe a camera so you can post pictures of what you find or a little safe...hmmmm, I think I just came up with my own wish list. LOL

the thing that stands out to me is that you said you see a coin that you Quote: need for my collection I think the concept of needing things and wanting things is a real problem in our society. If you don't have the money don't spend it! I am only 21 and I have a 2 year general studies degree that I got while working 50 hours a week. Since I don't know what to do with my education still I am working my butt of until I figure it out. I make 10 dollars an hour right now working full time as the stock room manager at a retail store bringing in trucks and processing freight. I have money after rent and all of my bills but I know I can't go out and buy myself every coin for every set I want. There are more important things, and I love coin collecting. With that in mind I utilize coin searching a ton. I would say 95% of my coins are finds from circulation, not buys, and I have I think 9 dansco albums going right now. I think it is very important for you and everyone to prioritize what you want and what you need. Get what you can when you can and enjoy what you are doing. If you are worrying about what you are doing then you aren't enjoying it as much as you could be. thats my thoughts. Good luck and I would highly recommend coin searching. If nothing else you can sell off what you find and buy what you "want" with the profits. This way you aren't really burdening yourself as much

I personally feel that there is a certain satisfaction that comes from slowly building a collection from circulation or an occasional purchase rather than just spending money on coins on a regular basis. I think it creates a greater appreciation of what you are able to get over than just accumulating things. Plus, building from circulation allows you to become much better acquainted with the individual series and helps to develop a critical eye and knowledge of the coins. "Finding" over "purchasing" has greater rewards more than just monetarily... it is the sense of accomplishment achieved through patience and persistence that makes this hobby so gratifying, in my opinion. Best of luck to you in all of your coin collecting adventures!

Dear _______,
Rather than give you some made in China trinket that will fall apart in a few weeks, I have made a contribution in your name to the Casutherland Numismatic Museum.
Museum hours are evenings and weekends, unless I'm cramming for exams.

I don't think it matters whether you have a job or don't have a job... with this hobby you'll always wish you had just a few more resources to devote to it. I think the idea of having a circulated modern set going is great. I'd also suggest having a second set running that lets you "search for deals". Something that's short on keys but won't be found in pocket change. These sets spring to mind: Ikes, Franklins, Kennedys, silver Roosies, maybe a date set of Barbers (dime, quarter, half). By having two sets going like this, you'll have one you can always be working on that doesn't really cost anything AND you'll have one that you can occasionally fill a hole for when you find a $10 bill laying in the parking lot.

Hey guys, I have been out all day long shopping for black friday deals as Christmas gifts for the family. After kinda of being out today and having time on my own, I think I have had some good time to think. These are all ideas and tips that are leading to exactly what I am concluding. I think that it truly is a good idea to just work from circulation and enjoy the hobby instead of constantly worry about getting another coin to fill a hole. Purchasing can be a good thing and a bad thing. Right now it is leading down the road of destruction for me and I am spending way too much money. I believe that what I am going to do, it sell a bit of my collection down and start searching more from circulation. One day, I will hopefully have the hobby stick with me and have the funds to afford nicer and more "key" coins. But right now, I do not want to wish my life away, and lose this valuable time with friends and family in college. Yes high school for me was probably more fun than college (lots less studying, more friend and sport time) but college is still an awesome time and I am always surround by great friends and Gods presence. Sometimes I can let time fly by me because I get so infatuated with the next coin I am getting and "needing" but truly just wanting. There are more important things in life and way better ways of spending time and money than constantly trying to build up my expensive sets. I just want to slow things down, and enjoy the hobby like you guys have said it well. Instant gratification and money expenditures in my generation could be the downfall of us. I am 20 years old and have a lot of life left to live and should be grateful for what I have as many of us sometimes can overlook.
You guys are truly awesome and thanks so much for the help. None of my friends ever know what I am talking about when I talk about coins or look through them, so I basically just shut up about them haha..I technically do not know any of you guys, but you're pretty awesome for taking the time to help me out and give me ideas etc.
Also biggfredd, are you just making a joke or saying I can ask you for advice whenever haha? I really got confused there.
Thanks so much, I will love to continue to hear from everyone on all of this!

One other question. As far as selling coins that I currently have now. Does anyone know is an 8 MP camera is good enough to capture details to sell some of these coins in my collection? Any tips of that or tips on using an android camera phone to take picture with? Thanks!

Quote: The problem I have with asking for coins for Christmas, is that my parents and girlfriend do not have the slightest clue on what in the world to get me. Shopping for collectors is either the simplest thing possible, or the hardest. Collectors are picky, often down to the brand of 2x2s they use. You need the man's version of a bridal registry. Start with a list of reputable dealers and if possible, give the dealer a list of stuff in their inventory that you want, in a wide price range. Now all you have to do is say "Go to Joe's Coins, he knows what I want." And you get exactly what you like.

Quote: I wish I had a fulltime job...but with college, its tough! It seems like yesterday I was thinking the same thing. I graduated 20 years ago this past May. My point is, time flies. Your full time job will be here before you know it.
