Looking through a box of Kennedy halves yesterday I came upon a 2000 and 2002 proof (clad unfortunately).

Each has some ding marks, but still good looking coins.

What do you do with the proofs you find in circulation? There really is no way to sell these as proofs. Do you hang on to them just because? Deposit them? Do you feel they are worth more than face considering the marks?

Just curious what others do when faced with this situation.

I can't wait to find one in circulation.

I hold onto all of my coins (and other collectibles). You never know when the price of something (like say for example silver coins) become exponentially valuable overnight.

I have only found a couple of proof coins in circulation (I don't roll hunt). I have one in my Type Set, the other is in a 2x2 for a later giveaway or trade

I just save them and stick them in a 2x2.

Keep 'em. I enjoy the fun of remembering the score from circulation or roll hunting. If I have an available 2X2 I will slap a found date on them, just because. Keeps me motivated when I haven't found cool stuff out in the wild for quite some time.

Interesting thread .. for me.

I break a lot of proof sets .. and home and at work in the coin shop.
many times if one or all the coins have a spot .. or problem, I put them
into the bag that goes to the bank for deposit.

Nice to know that finding them brings joy.

I just keep em. Found a 1957 proof nickel a while back. Really circulated but I could still tell it was a proof!

Maybe I'm a hoarder but I can't bear to just spend them. I keep them, occasionally will pass them along to a youngster. There's a couple of people at work whose kids "like" coins and we have an ongoing thing where they give me $1 and I'll bring them $1 of coins for their kid.

So I guess I am "spending" them in a way.

I just found one today. A Oklahoma State Quarter Proof. It is a little scratched up too. But I am keeping it in a 2X2. I think they are nice to hang on to. =)

Keep 'em all! Fer cryin' out loud, it's not like you're losing much on face value at the rate anyone can find them in the wild.

GR58, I like your take on things too.

I have never found a proof coin in change or in a roll, but I don't do much roll searching. My wife has found quite a few of these though (she has access to them that I don't). I put them in flips and save them. I cannot spend something that was intended for a collection, even though they are "impaired". They are still pretty nice. I like the idea of giving them to kids (in flips). They will enjoy them more because they are so shiny.

You regard them for exactly what they are.

Impaired Proofs.

Not worth much more when impaired, than a normal business strike, except if that date / mint mark was never struck for circulation. I would keep them anyway, just because they should be scarcer than normal, and they didn't cost you any more than face value. The Mint would be happy too: 100% seignorage profit!

I am not a specialist American collector, but as I understand it, the SF Mint produces a lot of the proofs, and these (I guess) carry the SF mint mark. If that is the case, the circulated proof should be valued at a little more than for other mints with the same date.

I've found many clad proof halves roll hunting. They are worth 50 cents. I spend 'em!
The silver proof coins I find, I keep.

It depends on damage. If damaged, I just put it back for those that save them. If really still nice, I keep them.
