8mp is enough. I've taken nice shots with a 0.3mp Sony. The important feature is a good macro lens.

My point is, time flies. Your full time job will be here before you know it. It's approaching 30 years for me. My college days seem like a lifetime ago. The years have a way of passing whether you want them to or not, or even if you're aware of their passage. Those days were crazy... I worked three jobs, attended school full-time, and still had the time and energy for all that and a lot more. Enjoy that life while you still can...  |

Casutherland, I feel your pain. I'm a junior in college and money is always tight. I try to make money off of the hobby when I can that way I can continue collecting. I took some money out of my savings to purchase 5 25Th anniversary ASE sets. After selling the sets and paying them off I have another $1,000 or so that I can use for some key dates. I know the opportunities to make this kind of money are only there once in awhile but it works for me :) Best of luck to you and happy to see there is at least one other person my age out there still carrying the hobby along! |

There's a dedicated forum on here to digital photography.
The short answer to your question... 8MP is plenty.
You'll get pretty good pics if you do the following things
1. Lots of light
2. Auto flash off
3. Macro mode on
those 3 things are 85% of what makes a good coin pic and will get you by for sub $100 coins... the other 15% is the hard part.

Yup I need to slow it down and enjoy these years while they are here! Sometimes I feel like I let time slip away and kind of auto pilot through my college years. Its sort of hard not to when your major is ridiculously hard and you feel like you have to study 24/7 but then procrastinate so you can spend time researching coins haha...Girlfriend, FCA, Coin collecting/researching, and studying takes up 100% of my time and I still probably do not divide that time evenly :/ But ya those were some amazing tips SpringCypress. I will try to take those tomorrow with a desk lamp and get the lighting just right. I'm going tomorrow to pick up a box of lincolns and probably a box of Jefferson nickels. I CANNOT wait to go through them! Havent been this pumped about collecting in a while! Most likely am going to sell some of these SLQs and my 1909 62 RB Lincoln Cent graded by NGC to make a little extra money. Put my Lincoln's wheats on the back burner for a while. You also have to consider that I put a decent amount of money into my girlfriend as well haha..(dinner, presents, you know how it goes) I have noticed that she wanted to go through a box with me once which is awesome. She sort of lives out in a rural part of Tennessee, and her great grandmother owned a general store in town and they kept a bunch of change. There is probably over 2000 in silver alone and tons of wheats. I really need to go through that and see if there are any rare dates in there. Her family doesn't have the slightest clue about coins or collecting. All they know about is the silver content and thats literally about it haha. Coin_Guy, it doesn't seem like there are many collectors like us out there. Every shop or show I go to, its 90% men in there 40s+. I rarely see anyone my age and if I do they are not very friendly or give two flips about anyone their age haha. Keep up the collecting and lets start the hobby out younger and younger with our kids one day bro. |

I agree with Bizybackson, get as much education as you can; someday you'll be putting together a collection
of gold coins instead of nickels if you do it right when your young. Definitely slow down and enjoy what you have,
namely your youth, health and girlfriend. What you have now is better than anything there is.
As far as coins are concerned, isn't it funny how we obsess over the holes in our collection, then when we fill them
we put the collection away and get more holes? Slow down and make the people around you happy, leave the material stuff to the wacko's on "reality" tv.

I see in a lot of hobbies where people lament over the lack of youth interested in that specific hobby. There seems to always be people driving to get youth involved. I agree with this, but also notice something else.
During your youth - and the family raising years - people have other priorities which they attend to. Hobbies are not the primary focus of their lives - nor should they be.
After the nest is empty is the time a lot of people settle down to totally enjoy their hobbies since responsibilities to others has decreased. It is these people who then tend to share the hobby with grandchildren b/c they have the time to do so. This is why I believe a lot of people into coins, or whatever, tend to be the over 40 crowd.
Some hobbies die (google "date nails" sometime). But coin collecting is something that will, most likely, always be there. It has stood the test of time.

I loved my Mavica. I'd still have it except for 2 things.
1. Anew battery costs over $50
2. I don'tt have a floppy drive on any of my computers

I bought two new batteries on ebay, less than $15 delivered for both from two sellers. One was still in a radio shack package with a $50+ tag. I forget the numbers (most sellers will cross-reference them), but your camera came with a 330, but will also take a 550, which was made for the video camera and lasts several times as long. Since then, they've made a 770, which will last all day. All use the same charger. |

Yes slow down college student. I agree with the people in here, it is a life time thing. Enjoy school while your there. AS far as coins just do like I do when I am short on cash. I just go through my change with my 10X loupe and look for all the possible options in the Lincoln Cent errors, state hood mishaps and the dollars with missing edge lettering. See still fun to be had. You could also do roll searching for fun and see what you can find. Enjoy your time in school and soon it will be landscaping will be back up. |
