I got my first new 100 dollar bank note the other day, this started a conversation with the bank teller and she told me that they had been instructed to pull all the old bills from circulation right away. I'm guessing this will apply to all denominations once the new bills become available. I guess what I'm saying is that if anyone was thinking of keeping a few samples of the current bank notes then now is the time to start snapping them up because once the new ones show up the old bills will will become very scarce very fast.

they're instructed to pull them don't mean that they'll not be in circulation anymore. Like now, the older versions of paper money are still in circulation, but the banks try to pull them away from you.

You can hoard tons of them, but they won't be worth anything. I still spend crisp bird series notes, some even with sequential serial numbers, because I cannot sell the darn things. Even crisp 1967 dollar notes are only worth two-three bucks...

I agree with SPP. They will only be a premium if there are fewer around than collectors want. But that won't happen because there will be hoarders that save more than the market will ever want. And the added problem with the high denomination notes is that the holding cost..or opportunity cost....is too high. Its like the recent thread about the $1,000 dollar bill.........just not worth holding on to.

Setting some aside for your personal collection now is a good idea as it costs no premium, setting some aside as an investment is not wise.

You can go into banks right now and get uncirculated bundles of Journey notes.

I did this years ago with the $1 and $2 bank notes. Appears I'll have to do it for the $5, $10 and $20 now too. Thanks for the alert.

Sadly, I agree with SPP-Ottawa => 44 years later and my 1967 centenial $1 notes are only worth a couple of bucks (hardly seems like a sound investment ... collection "yes", investment "no") ... => However, if you do actually decide to snatch-up a bunch of the more recent notes, then you would be wise to check the catalogue and at least aim at the lower "quantity printed" notes (because the varieties can range from the 100's of millions-printed, down to the 10,000's of thousands printed, which obviously makes a big difference to collectors) ... like us, right?! So, good luck hunting for the keepers!

Common folk see an old banknote and think it's worth a fortune. However, they're pretty worthless. Go ahead and save that $100 - you'll be the only one appreciating it.

Notes from 1937 and earlier are worth quite a bit

I have a friend who likes to collect one of everything. I guess I was thinking of him when I started this topic. If you like to keep your own collection up to date then now is the time to start looking for some nice samples of the current series. But if your looking for an investment, well.... Like so many others I myself have a stack of fresh crisp one dollar bills that I picked up just before the introduction of the Loonie and they aren't worth much.... But I'm still glad to have them.
