Constantius-Gallus

I believe the seller has identified this coin wrong as Constantius Gallus. I would appreciate it if you guys would see if my ID is more correct. It's very close but not quite right.

RIC VIII 361

Constantius II AE3/4. AD 355-361. D N CONSTAN-TIVS P F AVG, diademed, draped & cuirassed bust right / FEL TEMP-REPARATIO, soldier standing left, spearing a fallen horseman who is wearing Phrygian helmet, reaching backwards, ASIS zigzag in ex.

I realize it says ASIS. The coin shown on Wildwinds says BSIS?

Here is the photo of it.

You are correct Gil-galad, this coin is Constantius II not Gallus, Gallus is almost always shown bare-headed where both of these are clearly diademed.

The RIC number you give is also correct assuming the two coins are 16-18mm, if they are 18-19mm the number would become 352.

As you build up knowledge you will be shocked by just how many coins are mis-attributed by sellers and even reference sites.

I bought a lot of '4 Constantius Gallus' coins a few weeks back and only 1 turned out to be Gallus, the rest were Constantius II!

A most useful rule is that 99.9% of Falling Horseman coins with any kind of headgear belong to Constantius II. The exceptions are the rare AE2 size of Constans which will show the less common horseman poses kneeling or sitting on the ground rather than being on the horse. Small coins are all Constantius II or bareheaded. There are AE2 bareheaded coins of Gallus and a super rare one of Magnentius. Small bare headed coins can be Gallus or Julian so you do need legend to separate those but the difference between those two names is rarely a problem if you have any letters from the name. You never get a coin so worn that you can not tell if there was headgear since the ties behind the head remain long after the part on the head has worn away.

Thanks a lot guys!

The seller states that the coin is 18 mm.

It actually took me quite awhile to figure out what the coin's ID is. There is a great variety of all those coins.
