So, I am pretty sure that my keen eye has spotted an error coin here, what is your professional opinions?

I am no pro but it looks like either a die clash or deteriorated die.
I don't think it would add any value.

So then other than being shiny and in good shape, it's nothing special with the head showing through on the obverse?

Die Clashes are collectible, but usually you need more definition on both sides. I would keep it. Someday some Merc specialist will try to build a set of die clashed coins and, who knows; might just need yours.

Typical type of clash. I, too, expected to see a full band coin.

THere are some incredible clashes out there, one springs to mind, because it's so strange, the 1864 LM 2¢ clashed with an IHC of all things, still looking for one myself. The 3¢ nickel series is full of clashes if you decide to collect clashed things, Morgans too, a lot of research on VAM's helps disseminate info on this series.

Actually it shows both. I also think the coin may be lightly polished.

Just out of curiousity, how do you come to your conclusions in this post?
