My wife purchased the Medal of Honor Commemorative Dollar for me as a Christmas gift knowing the only commemorative coins I buy have something to do with the military. Yesterday it finally arrived and I can't tell you how glad I am she did not just wrap it and throw it under the tree. Thankfully she has paid attention (I thought she could care less) and knew to open the box from the mint, and check them out. She even popped the plastic holder out of the box to inspect the reverse. I'm glad she did because when she flipped it over she noticed a spot :/

She quickly jumped on the phone and called the mint, they told her to return it today but that they don't know if the replacement will make it here by Christmas. Personally that doesn't bother me, as long as a replacement makes it here!

That's pretty bad quality control. I have to admit I wasn't so sure about this coin because the mint's picture of it makes it look ugly as sin. The coin I received had doubling on the reverse around the letters- which I'm sure is just run of the mill Machine Doubling... if I had a good enough camera I'd shoot a photo. I haven't decided whether I'll send mine back because you can't see the doubling without 10x + magnification.

The reverse design is actually a bit more dynamic in proof, surprised that your wife didn't go for the "upgrade." That is one ugly spot on the reverse. Sometimes those molded flocked holders hold the capsule so tightly, one almost has to destroy the holder to release the coin.

I agree. Forget throwing it under the tree, my wife wants to throw my coins out the window!
