Probably sounds a little dramatic, but I am having some trouble deciding what to do... what would you do?

My main focus in collecting is my Franklin half set and my modern quarters (states, territories and ATB).

I have also been collecting the Presidential dollars as they have been released, along with proofs. I am all caught up except the 2011 circulated coins.

My problem is that I am really kind of fallng out of love with them. They kind of bore me and I rarely look at them. I keep telling myself I am going to sell them and use the money to buy the last to bennies to complete my set... but then I change my mind.

If it were you, would you:
a - keep the collection of pres dollars going... why not
b - sell the proof sets, cash in the circ coins for face, sell the dansco and use it to buy my '51 and '57D Franklins.

I dont know, I just dont know if I feel like dedicating time/money into these coins. Maybe ditch the pres dollars and start the lower mintage, lower volume sac dollars?

Thoughts please!

are your presidential coins graded or raw?

i would say if you can get what you paid for them back, then sell them and move on. It's an ugly coin set that probably won't gain a hardcore following. The only ones I have are Proof 70 pieces for my 2009 Proof 70 proof set I am working on.

if you aren't happy with them as a series it makes no sense to keep purchasing them.

Agreed, why tie up your money in a set that brings you no pleasure or sense of accomplishment? Getting those last two Franklins will be a hecka lot more satisfying that keeping a set just because it's there and available. Use the proceeds to get something you really want. The golden dollars will always be there at least for the long haul, people are collecting them out of sheer habit from filling Danscos, or buying the yearly uncirculated or proof sets.

If it doesn't feel good don't do it.
And I like the idea of finishing the Franklins.

I ask out of ignorance, but do modern Presidential dollars (aside from errors) actually have any monetary value above face? It never occurred to me to collect them because they are all still in current circulation and are minted in vast quantities.

Thanks everyone, you are kind of confirming for me that if I dont enjoy it, why waste my time. If I thought it would one day be an amazing set to own, it would be worth it, but I really dont ever think they will be that popluar.
Is there anyone out there who really thinks they will one day be desirable as a set?

cc99999 - all raw coins

If I do sell, would you guys imagine it easier/more profitable to sell the proofs back in the original packaging, or in the dansco all together?

Thanks guys.

I just don't see the Presidential set ever being that popular. In the past, the unpopular sets of the time ended up being worth some money because not many people saved the coins in BU condition. The probelm in today's world is that for every 50 people who don't collect the series, there is one guy who is collecting entire BU rolls. My guess is that those rolls would eventually be broken up and used to supply the collectors of future generations.

As far as selling your coins, why not just offer them in the original packaging and throw the Dansco album in as one lot? Once you get 50 posts, you can even offer it for sale here at CCF in the appropriate forums.

Thats a good idea Granite. I think I might just do that.
Thanks for the suggestions everyone. Once I get my last two Franklins, I will take some pictures and share my collection of balding hippies with the forum!

I gave up on collecting the business strikes (since I collect those from circulation) and the proofs are still in the OGP, waiting on me to make a decision on an album.

I'm going to re-iterate what has been said. Go for something with real value (Franklins). Although Franklins aren't my favorite series, the Pres dollars are much worse and will not be above face value any time soon. (Common Ike's yet to be worth much)

In my opinion Modern coinage has been flooded with a lot of junk. Ever since State Quarters started coming out in 1999 we've had a whole bunch of over minted, meaningless designs. Just a race to see how many different coins the Mint can release per year, and each design has hundreds of millions minted....

If you do not have a passion for it, then save the few pieces you think could be of value in the future and sell the rest. With those proceeds go after what does catch your interest.

Don't feel guilty over your hobby, otherwise it's no longer fun! :-)

Wow, thanks very much for all the great responses. It's been very encouraging and helpful. I do almost feel like I've been hanging onto them out of guilt, since I started I feel like I should finish, but if I don't like it, there's no point. I'm going to move on, sell them and finish the franklins. I think that since I am also on a budget, I feel like I also need to make sure I put all my money into what I enjoy.... Having coins sit around that I don't really care for just kind of makes me see the coins I love in the form of small gold colored coins.

Do people feel differently about the Native American dollar coins? Anyone out there really into them?

I LOVE the Sacagawea's and the Native Dollars !
I'm current and complete with my Dansco with P&D BU's and the Proofs !
Amazing looking Set ! ...

Next years design with the horse will be really cool too I imagine.

I also do a couple folders with more circulated pieces just for fun.

As far as your " Presidential dollar Quandary", I wouldn't disagree with what's been said.
But I maintain a Proof only Whitman album (with the sliders)....and I think it's a neat Set to have and to eventually complete. I like the history of it. I like the idea of my kid to be able to learn from it.....take it to show and tell someday...whatever.
I also maintain some folders for my daughter and my Nephew.....just because it's "fun" for them.
BUT...If I had to choose between the Prez. dollars and Franklins....there's nothing to decide, Franklins win hands down.
Shame you couldn't budget the Proof Presidents AND finish your Franklins though ! ....

I concur with the previous responses. If a particular coin or series doesn't "float your boat" then it would be better to collect something you enjoy.

I collect mainly Canadian coins/currency but have built an affinity for U.S. coins in helping my son build his collection.

He is building mainly a type set but we are adding to the ones we like. Having said all that, he has but one proof Presidential dollar with no plans to add any others. We do have all the proof state and national park quarters and Native American dollars and plan to add to it each year as new ones come out.

I also love Sacagaweas. I think it is a great coin. The rotating reverses are fantastic and I think there's a large upside for them in the future. Historically Native American coinage has always had a good upside. Add to that the tarnish prone metal and you have something that will be very hard to get in cherry mint state years from now. I have a nearly complete set of slabbed Sacagaweas with Proof 69/70 proofs and MS-67 circulation strikes. It's one of my favorite sets.

All baby Dollar coins are the only US coins I do not collect. I don't even have one of the baby Dollars.
